Looking back, taking a job at Verizon is one of the few career decisions I genuinely regret. There are plenty of better places to work, so don't convince yourself this is your only option.

We come here to feel an ounce of the common connection and friendship we had before Verizon became toxic. We have to do it in the shadows because of how toxic Verizon became.

@dj That awesome!! You must been here for the good times I've heard so much about. I probably came in as you were leaving. About a year later something changed. It's been an unstable rollercoaster ever since. I was told it had something to do with a VSP in 2018+/- just before I came on. Something like the people that remained had no idea how to run their departments because the people that knew, left. I first heard this when there was no one in HR to onboard me. I had to figure it out myself with a link and a few pdfs they gave me that were outdated. The instructions didn't even align with the site. But it must have worked since the paycheck arrived. Can't ask for more than that I guess. Lol

@OP been with the company for 25 years. Retired in 2019. Like the company or not, everything I see around me came from that company. Still Retired and living it.

@a9 In my case there was only one or two good people in an organization that spans six states! It’s shocking when you think about it this way. The whole thing is a slow moving train wreck.
I’m embarrassed I joined and even more embarrassed that I stayed as long as I did hoping against hope that next reshuffle would bring good, competent leadership.

Out of 138 companies, Verizon did not earn a numerical ranking but was named as an honoree on Ethisphere’s 2026 WORLD'S Most Ethical Companies list.
It appears that Verizon was an honoree for the last three years for having programs supporting ethical values but you have to actually achieve having proven ethical values in action and deed to be considered as being ethical and then get a numerical ranking.
Imagine that.
You've seen the programs they were honored for having. You've answered surveys and taken mandatory training on them. You may have even utilized them only to find out that nothing could be substantiated.
Let that sink in.
Doesn't that sum up everything Verizon does? Claiming to do or be one thing while doing or being the opposite in practice?
In anticipation of ignorant responses like "Yeah well let's ask the people at those companies how they feel about those rankings"
Please, these places rate and rank companies at such a deep algorithmic level that the odds are if anyone the works for them disagrees then they would be the same people to complain no matter where they are and are well known for finding the cloud in every silver lining.
And if the companies did somehow game the system to get ranked then that means Verizon can't even misrepresent itself good enough to get on the list after having such long history of misrepresentation.
Again, arguing against the facts just adds a technical up vote.
I am ambivalent.
On one hand, after having worked in numerous industries for many small and large companies, I have never seen a more toxic, manipulative, passive aggressive, opportunistic, backstabbing organization lacking any essence of ethical or moral fiber that would eat it's own young if given the opportunity.
On the other hand, I remained true to who I am. Having avoided being assimilated into the above mindset, but not undamaged by it, I have never had a job that paid half of what I have made over the last few years. I have been able to live modestly and provide food and shelter for my family. I have been able to pay bills on time while building a small savings. All of this while so many lost everything during the COVID years with other companies. Most importantly, I have been able to set aside enough cash so my spouse will be okay for a while after the inevitable happens. The damage done by years of toxicity has taken it toll and I will not recover. My spouse hates it but knows if I had not held out, we would have been destroyed and I would have succumbed to my condition years ago.
So in the end we appreciate the extra time knowing it could have been worse sooner.
And while people who know me know what I do, very few know who I do it for because they might think differently of me as though I were part and parcel with the negative things they have seen reported in news feeds related to their individual professional industries. I hear Verizon mentioned and have to act surprised. "Wow they did that?" "OMG that really happened?" "How do they get away with that?"
The general public sees it as well but don't realize that, by the time they see it, it is a polished and perfumed tu-d that looks and smells pretty.

working at verizon was a major regret for me too. there were a few good people. but that’s the problem- only a few
