@wb In TAC it is crazy how many people above us know NOTHING or have any basic technical skills or values. I meet so many upper Cisco people in my TAC department and it's like everyone forgot how to do basic networking.

Sounds like you're in TAC... which to Cisco, you are a cost not an asset. Most advanced services consultants work about 15 minutes a week and get paid double what you do....and know half as much..AND get grade 11 or higher because they know acronyms like DHCP and OSPF, but couldn't network 2 cans and a string together. Sales makes even more and rule the roost, but most SE"s are really technical...the good ones anyway. So the answer is leave TAC.

Nothing is more important than life at home. It's all you will have left when Cisco LRs you for no aparaent reason.

My marriage broke up for other reasons but being a workaholic means I own a home. And food. And enough money to retire. Which I did. I don't regret it.

At Cisco I learned the phrase "children of a lesser god" which described much of Cisco's culture well. Unless one's leadership has the power and the work to advance your career one is going to rot on the vine at Cisco. At any point in the past few decades, up until a couple years ago at least, there were always better opportunities if you were willing to put in the work to make the next jump. That was the only path to increasingly better skills and therefore money at most companies.

What is the solution to this P1 incident?

Realistically the rules are changing fast and being stuck at a weak legacy company like Cisco is a risk. If you have far more than a decade left before you can afford to retire you may have to confront a reality where you work your butt off and have less to show for it. Now is the time to be career focused and to live as far below one's means as possible, making prudent investments knowing the market is overvalued by many metrics.

OP: I hate to break it to you but you aren’t saving Cisco nor are you that important. You are replaceable. They don’t care about you it your wife does. If you can’t see that, you don’t deserve her.

The fact she’s leaving you isn’t a Cisco problem. That’s a you problem. Put down the coolaid and wake up.

8:00 AM to 6:30 PM is too much work to you? If you want a 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM job with one hour lunch break and several coffee breaks then forget about working at high tech. Go find another job that satisfies your lifestyle and your wife.
