Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Fall PIPS, Spring RA

From what I’m told goal is 10% low performers pipped and out in December then a massive spring 27 action with impacted people roles and teams id’d as early as next week. If you’re not blocking time to job search weekly you’re doing yourself no favors .

@th they all know who is hit. They will lie and say they don’t. They will smile and ask you about you weekend and how the family is fully knowing they are about to drop you like a bad habit. They are snakes. And don’t let their Cheshire smiles full you.

Have any FLMs received their lists for Fall RA yet?

I was there for 18 years. Saw close to 20 RAs or more. Just about everything they do in this arena is deceptive. They for sure push out the older folks mostly due to higher pay. Not because they aren’t efficient or knowledgeable or do a great job.
Has been my experience ,over the past several years anyway, you will be told on RA day that your last day will approximately 6 weeks out ( this day is usually the end of the following the month you were told you’ve been RAd. You will get 3 months severance after that last day in lump sum check. Usually within a week . Good luck to you are there… Believe me , you will be happier once you leave there. I was . I left on my own 2 years ago.
You will feel Like a weight has been lifted. Cortisol levels will go down. Anxiety will subside wondering if you will be next.

@dd The concept of the "tie" was most critical when they lacked enough folks in the safe middle to layoff. If the age distribution was too unbalanced at the top they have to sacrifice some kid / kids. Then they could say, "oh we aren't discriminating against older expensive and high achievers - look at how many interns and 20-somethings we tossed in at the last minute to balance them all out".

Because they aren't just laying off a 60 year old who is unlikely to ever work again, they are also laying off a 28 year old, so that's like two 30 year olds, right?

These disingenuous games are the main reason age discrimination is so wide spread - too easy to game the system. The consequences of laying off a 60+ year old are very different than letting go employees under 35. You can't really average them out and pretend you aren't discriminating, but they do. It is apples (pomme) and wrinkly-old potatoes (pomme de terre anciennes).

@ch That is interesting about the "RAST/tie". Never heard of that before. Could that be one of the motivations to hire 3x times new hires? To create a healthy supply of "ties"? Needed to hide|obscure future actions. And they realized they didn't have enough "ties" to statistically bury what they wanted to achieve? No idea but very very interesting to consider.

What are your sources ? This is most likely rumors. IBM had these rumors circulating all the time, to keep the slaves on edge.

@ch Remember they accidentally sent their test email out a few weeks ago to the previous impacted former employees.

@bt IBM used to have a tool called RAST that they used to manage resource actions. Top features included identifying a "tie" - that is, the need to choose a younger person to balance out the older person they desperately want to get rid of; the "tie" allows them to pretend it is not age discrimination when it most definitely was.

RAST also helped to ensure that per RA they could keep the total laid off to less than 50 people per site. That is the WARN limit. IBM can ignore WARN if they can keep under that. Obviously the total can be vastly higher - multiple 49 by the number of sites and perhaps expect they will use WARN in places highly regulated like California. The count starts over for each RA.

In this manner IBM has shrunk the US workforce to just 43k from its post Gertsner numbers of nearly 200k despite many acquisitions and grown IBM India to over 150k.

@bk they didn’t violate anything because they kept it low enough at each site

Yep, aggressively job search now, with the goal being securing a new job that has a start date by Thanksgiving.

Starting a new job around the holidays is a nice way to ease into a new place too...lots of people taking vacation, and there's often a week off for everyone between Christmas & New Year's.

Also, you get the security of knowing you're good financially going into the new year, and can carve out some staycation/vacation time for yourself for either next month (October, already!) or November, for the time between whenever you close the door here, to when you start working at the new place.

Don't put it off...we're already in mid-September!

@a4 why do layoffs require 90 days? I thought they kick you out in. 2 weeks with 3 month salary?
