Study finds People who want to work remotely are unsurprisingly actually more productive and happier

  • Study finds remote workers are far happier and more productive
  • Remote workers reported much higher well-being, but were also less likely to leave their role
  • Study also dispels myth that remote workers might feel alienated from co-workers

A survey of 7,704 employees at a large US healthcare organization by researchers at the Leeds School of Business found fully remote workers reported the highest levels of well-being, with those entirely office-based reporting the lowest level.

The findings, published in Frontiers in Psychology, also noted that it was unable to discover significant evidence that remote workers felt any less connected to colleagues or workplace culture, once again disproving the myth against flexible working.

Stay flexible
"This suggests you let people work remotely if they want to work remotely," said Stefanie Johnson, professor of organizational leadership and information analytics at the Leeds School of Business and co-author of the study. "Taking away people's choice of how they work is probably not going to help them in terms of their well-being."

“ We are being told their days are numbered, with most remote workers to be given an ultimatum at the end of year”

MR 75. Still remote. Still here. No ultimatums.

@t3 No remote workers on our team but we see this on several teams we interact with. Sometimes days of delays when a given task falls to a remote worker. We are being told their days are numbered, with most remote workers to be given an ultimatum at the end of year.

Our weakest links are our 2 full time work from home, but we will finally see justice during the next surplus. Manager made a deal to offload both of them in return for shifting some of our existing work to another team.

WFH people never retire. They want people to retire naturally without having to pay severance.

People respond positively to increased agency and flexibility.

Shocking?

I would be happy too if I could sleep in, work in shorts and a t-shirt, play golf and tennis on company time, mow the grass, and answer calls while attending the kid's basketball game.

If it’s not a real policy then it should not exist in the first place

Mgmt knows this and fits perfectly into their plan. RTO is about making employees as unhappy as possible to get as many as possible to quit.

Mgmt knows this and it fits their plan perfectly, because RTO is in place to make people miserable and quit.

Perhaps. But this company is not interested in their employees being happy. Ideally, they want most of them to leave on their own. So they turn the sc--ws tighter to make them miserable.

That is why WFH and Hybrid are the industry standard. Nobody is doing 5 days anymore. That’s why we can’t attract any new talent.
