Thread regarding Humana Inc. layoffs

Why Fix what is wrong with the Plans with Failing CMS Star Ratings when you can simply Throw Them Out!

Humana said on its July 29, 2026 earnings call that 2027 plan exits will affect “approximately 600,000 members” and that “the majority of the plan exits were in plans with three and a half or lower ratings.” CFO Celeste Mellet described the strategy as cutting off “the lower tail of profitability.”

So, instead of trying to fix whatever it was that got dinged and caused Humana to lose Stars ratings from CMS, instead Humana just simply drips those plans where they were failing, so their overall ratings go up and then take their ball in go home. Sounds like a quitter mentality. And besides, who does it hurt? Oh wait, that’s right! It hurts our members!

I wonder if next our school system will allow kids to simply throw out any failing or bad test scores or bad grades, so as to raise up their overall grade.

Humana seems to be allergic to things that make 'minimal profit'. Instead of looking at them as 'gateways' toward more profitable plans. For example, someone on a lower plan might eventually upgrade if they can afford it. But instead, you're tossing them out on their ear because you don't make enough profit from those plans.

The same could easily be said about commercial insurance. NO, Commercial did not make Humana a ton of money anymore, as profitability had declined and negotiating with these doctor groups and hospitals was surely a pain in the a-s. But what they were, were gateways. People who had Humana commercial insurance were MORE likely to continue forward with a Humana Medicare plan. But instead of looking at it like a pipeline, we said 'oh, we don't make ENOUGH money there, so we're getting out.'

It really is a curious business strategy.

@f8 what I want is for leaders to do their bleeping jobs! Which apparently they do not know how to properly do…. Quite simple, LEAD!!!

…and don’t take the easy way out and stop paying yourselves exorbitant amounts of money, if as you say, the company is in such dire straits, which we all know is not the case. It is just setup system for leaders, Directors on up through executives, while everyone else gets constantly fed this bull that we are in such hard times, and it is only business, therefore we cannot give you raises PLUS we need to exit a bunch of our member’s unprofitable plans, instead of fixing them. However, we do have enough to pay ourselves millions BUT that is neither here nor there. PLEASE don’t focus on that but please continue being the lemmings we demand you be.

Sorry but it’s a business. Most can find another Humana or other plan. It’s not like they will have no insurance. Do you want to stay in plans that end up costing more money and have more layoffs? It’s bad enough there are consistent mini layoffs, do you want another project growth?
