Second-line manager here.
We’re getting pressure from above to put some team members on PIPs.
There are likely to be a lot (and I meant, A LOT) of RAs before December.
Stay safe, guys.

@2dc is MyScore for Consulting only?
@k1 the 'met' or 'not met' in myscore is the evidence this time
@1ea it’s time to start putting managers on pip then
My friendly TL told me that our manager is also pushed to nominate people for the PIP, and that there is a global push to improve the PIPs numbers.
I cannot imagine cutting more people, we're already doing overtime just to deliver the basics
@v0 that’s because it’s firing instead of a transitional layoff . For a normal pip at a normal place there is no seveance
@rp ask your manager what the terms of the PIP are and what severance and other benefits you can expect when your employment is terminated. Based on other posts, people leaving via PIP aren’t getting the usual RA separation pay or benefits.
@rq well it’s a fake paper trail of “cause” They are protecting their as--s by artificially creating a “cause” But if people retain their documents and record their conversations and meetings on the topic they can legally fight this fraudulent cause and get a settlement
@bc No one, I mean no one gets off a PIP, its a pretext to get you out the door without calling it a RA, the showing you the door for cause.
So, I have a few questions for anyone who might know the inner workings of this...
I was planning on retiring later this year anyway. I have a good relationship with my upline mgr, and after the first of the year, I told them that if they needed to use me as a chit to save someone else's job during a layoff, I'd be okay with that.
That never ended up happening. Meanwhile, I've come to hate my job more and more each day, so I finally gave notice that I was resigning.
Today, my direct mgr called and asked if I would be willing to let them put me on a PIP. Since I'm already leaving, they want to use me to save a coworker from getting put on one.
I have enough time to put the brakes on my resignation if needed, but I would love to get three month severance to do something I already put in motion even if I had to stay a couple of more weeks.
How long do these PIPs usually run before they actually move to an RA/termination?
Thoughts?
@hd That is an over reaching statement. People come in as managers through acquisition and people are just told they are managers and not given a choice. There are plenty of managers in the situation that didn't know what they were getting themselves into.
@ The charade of a system that is being misused and we-ponized under false pretenses will eventually fall apart if more people behave like you. It doesn’t hold up under even the slightest scrutiny, and it can become legally actionable if people collect the right data and documentation to support such a complaint.
Unfortunately, we need another 100 or so managers to stand up and do the same. There are easily that many who are grumbling about the situation, but they actually need to stand up and stand behind their morals and convictions. They need to be ethical by the literal definition of the word, uphold the business conduct guidelines as they are written, and stop the rat-like manipulation of those same guidelines.
This is true at TI as well -- expect more offshoring as more talent becomes available in India/Phillippines/Vietnam etc. No point closing one's eyes and ears and br---t beating that talent is inferior, it is not and most jobs don't require great intellect or skills. Finally, IBM has not been at the cutting edge for decades, so this is inevitable. Hopefully it will pare down and rise again like INTEL under Lip-Bu.
I told my upline that I'm not going to put anyone on a PIP, as without true evidences that means breaking the BCG...and if they want to force me doing that I want something written.
@hd Are you in Albany? That’s the M.O. here. It’s often said outright that you need to to get these positions here.
@gc To become a manager at IBM, first, you have to sell your soul to the devil .
To the managers: refuse the request to put people on pips! Resign first
@fk Bob can do a better job than a FLM, even better that a second line manager.
Third line manager here.
We’re targeting 2nd line managers and FLM VPs to reduce bloat. They will be given an option to relocate to India to manage every growing IBM headcount there.
As always, watch your back. .
@b4 that's because many of us got a reprieve under the arrogant and unpopular Ginni. While Sam Palmisano aggressively offshored, Ginni actually made some strategic investments such as Watson Health and deeply investing in design. On paper, these were good decisions.
The problem is that despite having had had tremendous talent once upon a time, IBM has always been led by useless parasites including Ginni herself who lacked essential leadership skills and could only make quarter-to-quarter decisions which shareholders love but which are anathema to generating long-term profit. Look at the recent obsession with people being client facing - they only wanted people who were bringing in green dollars but forgot that people only give you green dollars if there is a worthwhile product and the people who made that happen are rarely strictly client facing.
Ginni did a fine job burning her own legacy down, but whatever was left Arvind made sure was only black ash in the end. Design has all been but eradicated from IBM which makes sense since they were not allowed to make any strategic decisions on their own despite having the actual expertise. Heck, some of the product teams were led by "product owners" that were really failed journalists! Anything to keep experienced designers and researchers from having an actual say in the product, as they were too easily swayed by users and customers and real data. All the journalists did was bow to the whims of the clueless stakeholders, who were incapable of creating anything that wasn't pure mediocrity.
So much talent was wasted. But now the downfall of IBM is back on course. Time to die.
@av so true. I was also finally PIPed recently and it was the best thing that could have happened to me. Good luck to all of you out there. Life is better outside of this miserable company.
@OP how does PIP mean RA is coming? I don’t get why they have to frame it as lien performance . Most companies have a spreadsheet and just layoff however hurts them the least while saving the most and say it’s not performance based.
I’m honestly surprised the collapse hasn’t happened yet. I left Ibm after 18 years two years ago. I thought it was on the brink then.
It’s just a matter of a time before all the clients find something better. All the years of arrogance gonna come back to bite them. Quality isn’t even thought of. Only Profit margin. As profit margin shrinks. So do the ranks of the employees. It’s the only mechanism they have for boosting stock price prices .
Arvind and his team made so much money from doing this. That is the justification being made for destroying a “US” based company.
Indian Bullsh-t Makers
@a2 who do you think replaces the workforce in the U.S. and Europe?
@at Quality waved bye bye at ibm a long time ago
Offshoring to save money yet tanking quality. The "leaders" need to be replaced not the poor people getting RAs.
@ah it’s definitely coming.
IBM employees celebrate labor day Monday, Tuesday, they will get the pink slip.
Alvind the Indian wins.
@a8 when IBM fire the employee (RA/PIP), the responsibility (mission) is transferred to India. That explains the hiring frenzy in India.
The 2nd lines in Albany should be RAed. What have they honestly done? What value added? In most cases they are unnecessary
@a2 Are you serious? OP is almost certainly from North America or Europe, where the ranks of employees are being absolutely decimated so that they can be replaced by Arvind's countrymen in India.
@OP How do you explain, the frenzy of IBM hiring spree in India ?
Alvind at work
