Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Layoffs

There are signifficant layoffs happening, but no official communication has been ever shared, what is the percentage? It's horrible that people I work with just dissapear.
Standard tasks take now not weeks but months. Several roles managed by one employee for the same salary. Rinse and repeat.

@23r Actually, TK did a great job as the president of IATD. Dozens of new products were launched and the division sales and profits increased under his leadership. Check out the numbers. He is also well liked by most in the division. I have experience with about a dozen division presidents during my 30 years in the company, and i have to say TK is one of the better ones.

@OP if you did your job remotely during the pandemic and you are a jg 13 or Lower you can't count on your job moving to India. Execs might leave a token analyst here or there but you can be sure India is the new center of gravity for 3M.

@1df
Wasn’t TK the President of IATD? So many customer complaints on tapes from customers, posts on giving it to customers at silly discounts - as mentioned,… now why did he get this CTO promotion if he didn’t do well with Adhesive division? Politics

Endless PiP'ing of IT folks is another form of layoffs....write a mission impossible PIP and then dangle 8 week severance (min) package. Anyone with a brain and talented would take that severance package and run for the hills....run like FOREST GUMP.

This is all detailed in the horrible boss handbook which was written by the leaders in IT Strategy & Services. All of them masters of the universe….

Taking a look in Workday, overall numbers seem to be down around 2000 people month over month.

@1b6 well said.
TK is political enough even to try to move the needle. May be he will look at technologies to be sold ….

At these levels in a deadbeat company like 3M, it is not about what you have achieved so far or your capability, it is more about whom you know and if you have their blessings or not. With the current state of the company, it is very hard to move the needle for any CTO. Good luck to TK.

Agree. TK is a very political person. I have seen him move with the management in Medical Division. I wouldn’t rate technical savviness as extraordinary. But like somebody mentioned here, far far better than the d-mb MK who got to the position merely by knowing the CTO from childhood.

@18e you are absolutely right. KS is politically savvy. But I would rather have him as the CTO than someone brought from the outside or promoting MK to fill his buddy's shoes.

@13x
If he is a short timer, and moving to broader leadership role, he is not going to do much changes to R&D. Being good tech person way back in your career doesn’t help CTO position, Even AK was but did not change much in R&D, seriously. TK must have been politically savvy to rise so fast. Watch out!
At the end of the day, the executives just look out for themselves and rise through buddy system. Intelligence and subject expertise got nothing to do with it

@14b yes we are OUS. Generally our base salary are lower than similar job grades in US.

@12w I am assuming the payout you are referring to is outside the US. For the last several years in the US, the severance package is 2 weeks for every year of service with a cap of 26 weeks.

@wn The CTO role at 3M has limited influence on new product introductions (NPIs). Investment decisions for NPIs are made at the division operating‑committee level. As a result, the position has minimal operational impact unless its scope is expanded to include both resources and governance.

Regarding Tushar Kshirsagar, his appointment appears aligned with leadership‑development objectives. Given his strong technical background, business acumen, and demonstrated leadership capabilities—qualities I observed firsthand during his early career in the Medical Division—he is well positioned to excel in the role. It is reasonable to expect that he may transition to a broader executive position after a limited tenure as CTO.

I know of some colleagues who left with a fortune. 1 month payout per year of service. Capped at 24 months.

Depending on the payout, getting laid off can be a blessing

Cybersecurity MSPs sure can sell the lie that all they do is IT Security so they can do it better then a non IT security companies own in house people. Yet both hire from the same talent pool. People have the IT security expertise not some company.

Layoffs are coming to IT Security as well & people will be replaced by consultants or external FTEs that will collect a check here while working at a different company.

In IT, it is basically 60% but done very slowly in tiny bites that fly under the radar over about 2 years time. After it is all done, it will have been about 60%.
