Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

Leadership Exchange - Special Edition

“As we continue Forging the Modern Mutual, this meeting will provide leaders with an update on the company's enterprise transformation efforts, including key milestones, insights, and what you should know as we continue to shape our future operating model and ways of working.
Note: Given the topic, we've opened this meeting to include assistant directors senior directors, and vice presidents, regardless of people leader responsibilities. We are also inviting the Elevate cohort-including SLT, ELG, vice presidents, and managing directors-for awareness and the opportunity to participate.
While in-person attendance is encouraged, given the larger group, seating will be on a first come, first served basis. More details will be shared closer to the event.“

Snap. Snap.

This is the same L. J. that NM went digging into Canadian payroll for, just to keep her happy the one who jumped from contractor to VP in a single year and is best buddies with both the current and former CHRO. Suggest anything different from what she wants and you’re done. “New ways of working” somehow don’t apply to her. Ask the real people in HR the ones who actually know and they’ll tell you exactly what she is. I hope the whole tech side finally sees her for who she really is and calls her out with Forge coming, especially while she’s still out here hiring an AI person. Everything in HR has to revolve around keeping her pleased.

Happy I have found greener pastures at an HR department and company that doesn’t treat people like “human capital” but like humans.

TG this has to be brought to your eyes. The about of ethics cases placed in that department is eye opening.

@1a5 this is what happens when people who know nothing about tech start using ai. They start acting like they are some tech lead or something.

Our CHRO is the best leader in the company and will become the CEO. She and our department represent what is right with the company and the leaders who do things differently. Our teams have created second-to-none processes, and we are able to handle all tech work without the friction of ITSM or monolithic governance. It’s great to see that she will be leading tech in Forge. Look at the HR department to model what Forge will be, BG when she and LJ takes your job you will know her name she have more tech in her and her leaders than you.

@14t Northwestern mutual's H1-B and PERM filings needs to be investigated by DOL.

@14z+1m1pzmbft I got the same treatment back in the NS days when it came to numbers. I was an M2 for a team that had a ton of people issues that I was working on, so I could not contribute too much on the tech side. NS actually was reviewing GitLab numbers personally and asked my directors why I wasn't putting code in.

My manager shared some with me. From my understanding, there’s going to be cuts, and leaders are to push this narrative of “stretching/expanding your skillset” and leveraging AI to make up for the loss of people. There also seems to be a huge push for data and documenting every breath you take. If you can’t justify your job with a dashboard and/or numbers, you’re out

If you're a male in tech with H1B, then you're safe in NM and won't be laid off.
If you're a female with H1B, then the Indian managers in tech will promote you, even if your performance is average. For example, last month a lead software engineer got promoted.
Tell me which category you fall into ?

They should be holding leadership accountable for their lack of actual plans and over indulgence into AI that is going nowhere.

This is frustrating beyond belief. I am stuck at the SD level for more than 7 years and don’t see any room for growth.

Who has any trust that they will actually be able to succeed at the implementation of this project? Wonder how our employee surveys numbers are going to do or will they just skip them.

So what are the plans ? Fire more employees ? Move more already contracted roles offshore ? Or move all the tech jobs to Hyderabad all together? I am so sick of current tech scenes or any other fields. Literally Non stop stress. Outsourcing and firing will continue until we actually do something about it .

Absolutely true. And they're pretty sure they are going to get it right this time.

After all, they've spent the last 10 months and millions of dollars on various consultants to come up with this, so how could they possibly be wrong?

They'll be fine. This monumental sc--w up will affect only the little people and not them. They will collect their golden parachute package and retire quietly when it becomes clear that they sc--wed up.

This is all code for a mass layoff. The last time a meeting was presented like this, it was in 2017 when JES announced mass layoffs.
