Perception

Nice. Had my feedback session today and was told that I am a really great employee but my supervisor couldn’t overcome some negative perceptions about me that the assessment group had. Said I need to work on my perception this year to get the credit I deserve. What does that even mean? On one hand I am told I am doing great but then that I won’t be rewarded for it because people can’t see it and I am not visible enough?

@ch Very relatable. I went through the same thing. When you’re new and not part of any of the internal cults, everything becomes harder. You’re treated like an outsider by default, and people who are protected by their little cults make sure you stay in that position.

I was the only engineer in China on the gcgv project who could do vessel inspections. Unfortunately I was ranked in the US manufacturing team so no one saw my work. Was told that the work I did was easy and repetitive though literally not a single person in the world at that time could do what I did.

@OP I’m curious with all the fluff they said where did you end up?

@OP Experienced hire here. I was getting that same kind of "negative perception" feedback when I joined (no specifics shared). I found out that a few higher ups in my group, who had no idea what they were doing in their roles, felt threatened by my knowledge & experience. Instead of leveraging the information I was generously offering to share, they worked hard to discredit me. It took years to overcome this initial tainting of perception. However, they were ultimately demoted/let go. I'm still here! It's sad but it really does take a long time to overcome whisper campaigns, no matter how good your work is. Consistent also at XOM is that no one ever asks for your side of the story. Su-ks.

@OP You are quietly getting a negative message meaning that you were on the bubble and most likely will be dropped in PA group next year.

You need the support of the other supervisors and managers in the calibration meeting. If you can get them to speak up for you positively, you’ll do better. A negative reputation, fair or unfair, will hurt.

There are a couple of podcasts from Manager Tools about the “steel cage deathmatch” which can provide more explanation. Use their search tool and that term to find them.

Why aren't positive perceptions ever debited...? You're really bad, and so we're not going to give you the benefit of the positive group perception...

Terrible company we-ponizing a terrible appraisal system.

If you say or help someone, send an email and then open your mouth. Don’t open your mouth and don’t be lazy to send the email. Cc or forward the email to your manager later so that your value is documented by the boss and the LLMs. It’s also a message that you won’t be promoted to the next level for at least 3-4 years. That’s how long it takes to change you LM perception of this perception.
