The need for H-1Bs for a corporation is parallel to the need for an elite music camp for your kid. Both beliefs come from the same underlying assumption: that scarcity is real and unavoidable, and that outside validation matters more than building things up at home.
The "rare genius" myth drives both. Elite music camps and H-1B sponsorship both operate on the premise that top-tier talent is scarce enough that you have to go hunting for it rather than growing it locally. That premise gets used to justify skipping over slower, homegrown development in favor of importing people who've already been vetted somewhere else — a camp audition, a corporate sponsorship process — and treating that stamp of approval as the real measure of worth, even when plenty of qualified people never got that specific stamp. And underneath both is the same anxiety: parents worried their kid will fall behind without the camp, executives worried their company will fall behind without instant access to global hiring.
Parents convince themselves that a regular teacher and regular practice aren't enough — that only a pricey, so-called elite, high-intensity summer program can unlock real talent. In reality, most musical skill comes from unglamorous daily practice over years, not a few weeks of pressure-cooker intensity.
Companies argue domestic workers simply don't have the skills they need. But a lot of labor economists and critics point out there's often qualified domestic talent available — the visa system just gets used because it locks obedient workers to their employer, or because it's cheaper than training new grads yourselves.
Both are shortcuts. Both hurt America. Instead of putting in the slower work of developing talent where it already is, both systems reach for something that looks "ready-made" and comes pre-certified by someone else's gatekeeping process.

The amount of incompetence I’m exposed to on a daily basis at work in quite frightening. I truly do not know how we are still in business
