Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Offboarding Process

Do they revoke access to everything immediately? Since it happens (usually) on Monday mornings do you have to work the rest of the week or do you get to use PTO?

if you really want to keep a home device working, go to arin obtain all of dell's routable ip space, go into your home router and route these nets out to an invalid default gateway. Your pc ill continue to work fine and they can't shut you off.

thats what I did, cleaned off my files, last step was a low level wipe that if they wanted to recover stuff it would take them days, then I fed ex'ed it back in.

no issues, I took no files that were questionable....just didn't like IT thinking they had complete control.

“Work” till Friday, cause havoc the whole time

Typically, if they WFR you, it's done on a Monday or Tuesday morning, then you are expected to give back your laptop by COB that Friday. If you don't, the laptop will reboot on its own (typically by Tuesday the following week). When that happens the laptop will not sign into the VPN and network access is automatically blocked.

As far as whether you're expected to work through that Friday, that is up to the manager. I've worked in ISG and education and no one I know was required to use their time. Some clocked out immediately. Some worked through Friday if they had a close relationship with their coworkers. Others spent the remainder of the week trying to find another department.

@fm bit more complicated than this. Most of Dell has a 'block usb storage' profile now. Think it was about 3-4 years ago as I remember the Field Service Engineer team working on XE expressed some concerns following an IT email about it, but they were ultimately assigned a different profile.

Assuming you got an exception, copy something they don't like and you'll get an IT notification and a meeting invite. They will request you reconnect the same device you plugged in. If it isn't a match or if the data on it doesn't match, you could be fired on the spot. Otherwise, you're going to be explaining yourself.

Before your meeting where you are informed you are being fired they put spyware on your system and track everything you do. On mine they also disabled my USB ports so I couldn't move stuff to a Thumb Drive. They give you a way to move things to Microsoft One Drive and they will determine if you can take it or not.

In short if you think you are possibly on the block start gathering everything you want. Make hard copies if you can of reports and presentations etc.... Save things to a USB Drive.

Don't take anything that is sensitive.

they don't remove access unless you might be considered a risk of some type, but not common. but related, a word of advice, don't start emailing content to your personal accounts, don't try to connect USB drives, all that will turn out badly for you. there Is a reason the Dell corporate Windows image is about seven times slower than a normal Windows image, they have everything locked down and monitors.

You’ll still have access till the subsequent Friday. You can work the rest of the week and transition your accounts, projects, duties. Better yet, pack up your gear and leave immediately instead of providing an orderly transition.
