Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Security is a myth

There's no such thing as job security here anymore. Just the illusion of it until the next email.

@n2 Yea, you're right. Every time I look in the mirror and see those face tattoos and piercings, I realize my choices have held me back. As soon as my mom gets her car out of the shop, I am going to borrow it so I can broaden my horizons. I can't decide if I should go back for my PHD or look for another job.

@mp it seems every social group needs to have a punching bag to blame, be it boomers, x’ers, y’ers, etc.; if you’re looking for fault for your life’s dilemmas, try looking in the mirror.

The company is changing and not for the best. All I can say is do what is best for you if you see the writing on the wall it’s time to bail out.

@de after leaving Shell and being at another company, I would say Shell does not care for its people and many of the things Shell says it stands for it does not compare to its competitors

It’s a sad sign of the times. Shell was once a company where you could spend 30+/- years working different assignments, traveling for industry-leading projects, maybe get an expat posting for a few years and retire with a funded pension, a fat Provident Fund, continued life insurance and family medical benefits.
We don’t get to choose the times into which we’re born and random good fortune is usually only apparent after the fact.
And when it comes to caring about staff today, Shell is far from the enterprise it once was.
But maybe working here would look a lot better after leaving, then firing off endless cvs and depleting a pkg.

It's just one continuous re-org. Plan your life accordingly.
