Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Why are so many clueless people in charge?

I asked my director about project priorities and he said he'd check with his boss. Three days later, still no answer. It's managers all the way down, and nobody at the top knows anything either.

@wc why "control" people when it costs like 3 $Billion in tech debt to employ outdoor adventure tour guides and basket weavers AT A TECH COMPANY.

Not CS grads
Not P.Engs
But MARKETING and PSYCHOLOGY degrees.

Arista has only 5k employees, all technical.

Next, instead of AI they should replace PMs and sales with 75 yr old CASHIERS. No wait, ROCK CLIMBERS.

First, the "what." From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cisco :

On July 11, 1986, Bosack and Lougheed were forced to resign from Stanford and the university contemplated filing criminal complaints against Cisco and its founders for the theft of its software, hardware designs, and other intellectual properties.[11]

Cisco later started buying much of their software through acquisitions and if you run any of their code bases through static analysis at pretty much any time over the past four decades it should be apparent they've never had even the most basic development skills. With programs overrunning budgets by factors of dozens where almost all the budgets went to bug fixing by definition you are not getting any part of the development cycle right.

To answer "why," Cisco was a party until 2001 having built extreme technical debt which will never be resolved, and by the time the stock made it from $82 to $8 Cisco became where new careers went to die in legacy he-l. Cisco compressed the time it took great people from coming in the door to doing monumentally stupid things claiming "it was the best that could be done" to mere months. Margins remain too high for anyone to risk making the extreme changes that should have been made decades ago so Cisco would have resources today to pursue and own whole new markets.

@rq still better than having non technical manager!!!
I’m new to Cisco and this is probably the worst set of leadership I have ever seen in my life! I was at Qualcomm before joining Cisco, I thought qcom had weak leadership, but joined Cisco and now can appreciate that the leadership at qcom was not that bad! It’s horrible here, my boss and my skip are both technically challenged so getting any advice or direction from them is like talking to a rock

it's easier to control people when you treat them like mushrooms.

Heard from my friend that DUO has a lot of such clueless managers and most of them are in SRE. He fails to understand how these managers have been able to survive layoffs when others were shown the door. Some of them became managers because they were not good enough engineers and it shows.

For powerpoint.

If I owed a tech company I'd pay 50 thousand Bass Pro and outdoor adventure store people $130k a year to sit, do nothing, send emails, say "synergy" and wear polo shirts. I'd pay more if they can put words and pictures on powerpoint slides. They'd get dual roles and promotions if they have psychology degrees or marketing.

Why hire TECH pros for a TECH company??

Duh.

my "leader" always took offense when I inquired about implementing new work flows and adjusting priorities to align with what senior leadership and EVP communicated over several quarters.

@aw don’t forget poor decision-making too. In many cases, it’s simply because people lack the necessary cognitive ability, the relevant skills, or, more often than not, both !

My experience - inability to set priorities. Or to stick to them. More like a waitress that runs from table to table based on how loud the customers are. If leadership can’t commit why should the rank and file?
