Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

MN RTO bemoaners: If you don't want to go to the office, quit.

Sick of all the complaining about RTO as though it's somehow outrageous for a company to ask employees to work the way they were originally hired to work.

Companies are generally entitled to make reasonable changes to how work is performed. They can reasonably change your responsibilities, raise performance expectations, require compliance with workplace policies, and require employees to work from the office if that's what they believe is best for the business.

You don't have to agree with that philosophy, and it's perfectly reasonable to prefer remote work. But framing every RTO decision as the product of greedy executives or some malicious agenda ignores the fact that businesses make these decisions for a variety of reasons. Most companies would rather adopt policies that are popular with employees. When they see that a particular arrangement isn't delivering the results they expected -or isn't worth the cost- they change course.

In MN's case, employees are relatively expensive compared with many other locations. One of the main reasons those roles were based in MN was proximity to the company's headquarters and leadership. If employees are rarely in the office, that advantage is essentially gone. At that point, it's fair to ask why the company should continue paying MN labor costs instead of hiring elsewhere.

You may disagree with the decision, but it's not irrational. It's a business judgment about cost, collaboration, and the purpose of maintaining a headquarters workforce.

If in-office work is a condition of employment, your choices are to accept it, negotiate, or find another job. You'll be happier than complaining on here constantly.

That's not cruelty-it's how employment works.

@125 Also, imagine complaining about that on the layoff.com instead of addressing it or speaking up during meetings

Has anyone ever been in a meeting with these MN so called remote users, Nothing ever gets done, people join late in another important meeting ran late, then just another meeting or lets involve XYZ before we move ahead with this solution. And the pattern continues and nothing ever gets done. Or the classic I have to jump to an important meeting, lets schedule another meeting for next week same time. ... SMH

The people super mad at all 10,000 Minnesota Medtronic employees make me laugh. Life is too short to be this angry. Clock out and go for a walk.

@v5 the chit chat is so real. I was in the office for about six hours today and about 90 minutes was people stopping by to chat and hallway convos. Nothing related to work, but I guess this is collaboration? Maybe a visiting fat cat shareholder in a suit saw me from a distance and decided to buy 500,000 shares because he was inspired by people being in the building? Lol

Then I went home and had the most productive two hours of my day from my couch before signing off.

@we sounds good, Geoff. A nice way to admit that the executive committee just doesn’t know how to run a profitable business

@v6 Pre-covid people also weren't working at 30% with their kids on their laps, taking calls in their car while they only half pay attention, or taking 4 hour lunches to go and buy their kids a costume for their friend's birthday party.

Perhaps if so many hadn't abused it, you wouldn't be losing it now.

@rc This is 100% true. People here are just crying because they're entitled. they know the function and importance of any given HQ. This is part and parcel of having the privilege of being hired by an HQ.

Everyone here knows the reality of why it's MN people being asked to return before everyone else, they're just spoiled and lazy.

The gravy train has run out, Minnesotans.

@v5 100% thinking back pre Covid ... it was silly how much water cooler/chatting/ let's go for a walk or have a long lunch was going on.

My schedule while remote was like this:
Drop off kids, start at 730a, work without breaks until 4-5pm (often later depending on the day)

When I return to the office:
Drop off kids, drive to work, start at 9am, talk to coworkers until 10a, work from 10a-12. Take lunch. Come back and talk to co workers, work from 2-3p, drive home. This is just the reality - and no I will not put in extra hours in the evenings. This return is just for me to get extra chit chat time with my co workers and less time working. If you don’t think this is true you are just kidding yourself.

Image inviting potential big league investors or an exciting start up to HQ, and then someone asks. "Where is everyone" Sounds stupid? , but if these Investment firm or start up has a RTO policy that followed. MDT looks like a sinking ship and they walk away because MDT can not even controls its own people.

@kg Because MN is literally our head office and meant to be where the most cohesion actually occurs. It's critical to the company's success that their HQ is functioning, vibrant, and collaborative.

Little did they know the MN people were gonna stay there for 40 years and stagnate until they retired

Yes, I have noticed the dress code is being ignored by the young female new hires during the summer months, but I'm not complaining. Its kind of refreshing.

Who is RTO only for MN? Why not for everyone within 25 miles of a site or campus?

I hate RTO policy because I have to go back to the office 4 days a week just for creepy guys to hit on me throughout the day.

I enjoy RTO. I can badge in 5 days a week. hang out all day, pick and chose what I feel like doing and leave whenever I want. Granted I'm -30 mins away from the campus.
Best part of the day is asking co-workers, How's your "Insight chart results" and looking at their sad faces.

@dj my projects actually need pushed out deadlines because I spend so much GD time commuting and dealing with meaningless white noise in the office. It’s eye opening how much of a time waste being in the office is after getting to work from home for years.

Those parroting “su-k it up” are out of touch with the reality of running a business in 2026. It’s a dinosaur mindset.

It's a RIF, not everyone can pick up their life and move to live next to the office. MDT has been doing 4 days RTO already. The stock is still in the gutter. I highly doubt forcing a thousand people back to the office is going increase productivity.

"originally hired and recruited as remote" Ya we all get it. But fact remains MN is having a RTO problem and decided it NOW includes the entire MN work force. I notice no other region is complaining ... Simple Logic

The remote workers will be replaced by AI soon enough. They better learn how to turn a wrench if they knew what is good for them.

@dp Our colleagues in India do work in office. They have a weird flex schedule where they work in office 5 days then 3 days the next week.
They do not have cubes, their space is a seat at a long table with colleagues on both sides. I am not advocating off-shoring jobs, but everyone should check facts before speaking.

@dp True, but what is the out come when you out source to a lower trust, lower IQ, lower skill environment? Hmm, maybe lower quality, lower volume and worse culture even why in the short term earnings appear better.

Bingo. Medtronic is trying to get more people to quit. They need the headcount and free up cash to hire people in India. This just proves that remote work works.

@OP Certainly a complex topic but I admit, you are correct. It’s the MDT show, they get to decide what band is playing. If not for this new RTO is targeting employees who have been designated as remote, I would completely get in the train with you. Also, it’s subjective - they rescind someone’s remote status if they are unlucky enough to live within 26 miles of the office.
Lastly, I am still trying to understand what is so beneficial about being in the office. Have OHS scores gone up? No. Are projects meeting deadlines earlier? No.
This is nothing more than a RIF without severance. They will see how many employees will leave then finalize the next RIF numbers.
