Age discrimination in action

In the last several rounds, most of the people let go were in their 50s and 60s. The most experienced people. How is this allowed?

@1rs It does get to a point when you have to ask yourself if it is worth working in a place, knowing you have a lot of knowledge and wisdom to offer, but is no longer appreciated and feel as though your leadership is looking at you and treating you like your an “old fool” that needs to be put out to pasture for the “young bucks.” Not much respect any more for tried and true weathered experience and knowledge.

If you can afford to, and if you want to, I would try to find a way to move into either retirement or at least semi-retirement, and just forget all about this sector of work. It really is their loss if they lose all our knowledge. Many of my peers have no idea of some of the challenges and experiences I have had for almost six decades now. If they did, they would be shocked as to how I could have even survived some of those challenges.

Anyway, their loss. I am now enjoying life reading good books and reacquainting myself with hobbies I was far too busy for when working full time. And I have learned to humble myself, be content with less, and I now see all persons as my equal. Sadly, I think I used to put myself above some folks. No longer the case for me now, thankfully.

I am older and would welcome a RIF. If they offered voluntary separation, people would line up.

Someone once said they could replace seasoned associates with a couple of new college graduates and that person now heads a division and is under 40 years old.

@g5 Pensions are still in play for people who were hired 20 yrs ago. Few and far between left.

I takes about a year for a new hire to figure out how to work here in any dept. So many inside "rules", processes, how to get from point a to point G, who to go to, who to avoid, who is the person you can trust to tell you the correct thing etc. Simple example go to Town Hall as a new person and not understand one word about what they are babbling about. Funny part - have a computer issue they give you a ticket, but don't tell the new person what it is for or what to do with it - ...wait for a raffle?

Longevity equals a significant amount of knowledge not written down anywhere. They don't care they who do nothing, think they know everything

Not like they layoff older folks so as to avoid paying a pension or such. We don’t get one. Maybe they’re a bit higher pay grade than a younger guy, but they know more of our methods and I’d say more productive. Why layoff older folks? I’m thinking its pure who likes who? Or is it whom?

Yep. They’ll lay off some younger person at the same time do it doesn’t look like discrimination. When you get riffed they send you a spreadsheet that will show ages of people who got laid off in same department. If they had to lay more than one person off they will balance with younger person. The lawyers that work for this company will make sure that it doesn’t look like age discrimination. They want to get rid of the older more expensive employees. Anyone who has been here long so severance doesn’t cost them an arm and a leg when massive layoffs due to AI happen in the future.
