Is there opportunity for career advancement anymore once the merger goes through? My mates at BNSF say they don't see opportunities like they used to. The merger would mean more management to cull through already.

I had to stop myself from being completely sarcastic in replying to this one. If you want to advance in the company then you have to be able to do a number of things. On top of what the first reply stated, you have to be able to lie all of the time! The UP actively promotes lying in the management ranks. They don't want good management that does the right thing. They want management that will do what the upper management wants whenever they want. In a nutshell, they want dishonesty in all levels of management that can make their numbers look good! Something else they want is threatening behavior. They want the management ranks to show threatening behavior towards the lower employees. The UP wants those in management that can be threatening in just about every way possible. I really don't know why anyone would want to advance at the UP. I think the UP is nothing more than a time bo-b right now. I don't think there's anybody at the UP right that wants to see the merger fail more than the non-executive personnel. The sentiment at the UP is that this merger is going to be rejected or it's going to be a failure just like the UP-SP merger. If you were around in the 90's then you'll know exactly what I mean. Do yourself a favor and stay out of management. Don't look for ways to advance at the UP. It's really not worth it! If by chance the merger is approved, then I expect there to be even more job losses.
Plus they want all the college kids that they can mold in to puppets.
Advancement???? LOL all depends on you. You good at kissing A$$ and throwing your fellow coworkers under the bus, you'll be promoted in no time even if you Su-k at your actual job
