@17r you’re not paying attention. When a company is interested in simply cutting staff because total work hours needed in the future are less than what are needed today, they will not offer special severance. They just hand out pink slips.

When a VSP is offered, the company is not interested in cutting staff across all age groups because the company is really not interested in cutting staff at all. What they want is to cut total compensation, which includes salary, bonuses and stock. And which age group generally has the highest total compensation? So while a VSB does result in staff reductions, it cuts targeted staff.

Why give any special packages beyond the normal severance policy. Just make the cuts across all ages and demographics to satisfy the law. Simple as that.

@10f The EEOC gives special protection to employees that are 40 years old or older. If you’re not 40 yet, you don’t get that protection. Why would the company offer a younger employee anything to get rid of them? Just give them a cardboard box.

@f0 Except that VSPs are not gifts or give aways. A VSP is the premium paid by the company to get rid of high salaried employees (normally older folks). If the company needs to reduce total employee compensation again, they won’t say to the older folks who didn’t take the VSP last time that “well it’s too late for you”. That defeats the purpose, right. Why do a VSP for young employees? You just have to go out and hire more young employees or be left with a top heavy organization. Now if you say that those older employees should just be laid off, you clearly don’t understand the purpose of non-discrimination laws. Are you beginning to understand?

@pq sounds like someone has some sad school memories. I suggest counseling.

@f1 Yeah they celebrate people like they achieved something. Its Occidental. Like being the successful kid in a special education class in the bad school district.

Also no single retirement parties if they have another VSP. Lump people in groups of 10 with a maximum budget of 500 dollars per party. Make sure you let them know how much you have valued their contributions. I kid you not. That is what they did to people during the last VSP.

Should not be any VSP for older employees. If you missed out on the two recent ones that was your choice and you have made tons of money by staying on the job. Just retire.

Brutal. At least in the 1980’s and 90’s they would let you take the rest of the day to pack your things and hug your fellow coworkers while wiping away the tears right before going home to your family.
