Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

How toxic was your manager at WF?

You’re not going insane — you just spent years in a system that promotes the ones who break people, not the ones who build teams. Time to rate the “survivors.”

Toxic Manager Rating Scale — pick all that apply:

  1. Credit Thief – Devoured your work, slapped their name on it, and got praised for “thought leadership.”
  2. Ghost Boss – Vanished when real leadership was needed, magically appeared when there was credit to grab or heads to roll.
  3. Micromanager Supreme – Controlled every detail of your day, yet somehow had no clue what your job actually was.
  4. Backstabber Pro – “You’re doing great” to your face, “they’re not a team player” the second you leave the call.
  5. Blame Shifter – Their mistake, your “development opportunity.” Somehow you were always the common denominator.
  6. Teflon Titan – Nothing ever sticks. Reorg after reorg, layoff after layoff, and they’re still there, failing upward.
  7. Mood Roulette – You never knew if you were getting fake-friendly or full meltdown. Outlook calendar by day, unstable by nature.
  8. Gaslighter-in-Chief – Made you question your memory, your performance, and eventually your sanity.
  9. Loyalty Leech – Demanded 110% loyalty and availability, but ghosted you the second you needed support.
  10. Corporate Chameleon – Perfectly adapted to a toxic culture. Thrives in politics, allergic to accountability or empathy.

Add up your score and drop it below.
The higher the number, the more you earned your severance, your sanity, and your exit.

My worst manager ever was KG when I worked in Risk. Off the charts incompetent.

WF Rate My Manager app would be good since we do not get to provide feedback on them.

@OP here.
Reading these replies, it’s wild (and depressing) how many people are checking “all of the above.” The “seagull manager” comment is dead on – that’s basically Ghost Boss + Blame Shifter with extra sh–.

A few patterns jump out:
– Forced ranking and we-ponized 360s (using jealous peers, hiding reviews, rewarding people who provide “dirt”).
– Managers surviving every reorg while wrecking teams.
– People only realizing after they’re out that it wasn’t them, it was the system.

Thinking about turning this into a tongue‑in‑cheek “Your WF bully manager Scorecard” so folks can rate their old orgs/managers and see how much of this was structural vs “just me.” Need to get over the fear of work therapy, basically.

@OP
You don't need to disect with all these labels.
They are seagull managers- they swoop in, sh-t on everything and then leave. That is all you need to know,.

@OP. MBA here. Termed recently. Yes, in graduate program this was discused and that is how I am surviving right now mentally knowing it was not me. As far as when, I am sure there always been pockets of bad actors but it became widespread in 2022 when forced ranking ramped up. The 360 review is just another tool mgrs use against you. They purposely look for peers that do like you, are jealous or are willing to do or say anything for a promotion. In 2022 YER the mgr forgot to shut off Workday and I seen 2 rotten 360s I did not solicit and took it to HR. Only thing happened was they were hidden. I know it was mgr fishing because those employee received promotions. Also a mgr asked me to provide a dirt review on their employee who was laid off in 2023. It is do obvious the toxity that is going on.

Every single # above is 100% accurate. Boss was a narcissistic coward and ended up firing me but I'll get the last laugh being at a much better firm (since these toxic managers/leadership destroyed Wells) and becoming much more successful than him.

@OP here, Wow. Don't any of you have somewhat acceptable managers? Where/When did WF go wrong? Did WF ever renew the 360 degree review they once had? Some of you have been at other banks and now are at this one. Was your previous bank as toxic as WF? And for the MBA's out there. What should be taught at business schools so that graduates from them avoid places like WF?
