Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Time to move on

This place operates like a spreadsheet with badges. If you are not part of the small group steering decisions, you are just a cost line waiting to be adjusted. There are companies that still treat people like long-term investments. T is not one of them.

I will be joining you in about 4 months. As the time gets closer it is getting harder and harder to go into the office. One of the best days of my life will be when I tell my boss that I am leaving. Unfortunately, it will also be one of the worst days because I do value my co-workers and I know I will be leaving behind additional work and burdens that they will have to take on themselves.

other recommendations: badge certifications and corporate courses presented on off-white heavy stock paper. Make those worthy skills pop off the paper. Show you mean business and mail with registered post stamp from the USPS to HR corporate address. Make yourself available by providing a landline for the fax machine. You are ready and able!

Yep, I’ve been trying to move on for a couple years now. Got hit with bad job market and nearing 50 makes it tougher to get hired.

You can do it. It took me about 2.5 months to get out of this sh-t hole.

My recommendations:

  • Force yourself to do at least 3 applications a week and don't take any shortcuts.
  • Spend time tailoring your resume to the job description.
  • Make sure your resume can be copy/pasted from PDF -> notepad without any issues.
  • If you're not getting responses, keep improving your resume. It took me about 2 months before I started getting consistent callbacks.
  • Focus on deliverables and achievements, not naming off technologies. I can immediately tell when someone is using ChatGPT to bullsh-t, because it doesn't tie the technology to any real experience.
  • Don't dump AT&T until you are starting your new job. Also don't bother with a two weeks notice: even AT&T doesn't give you two weeks anymore.

Yep, I’ve been trying to move on for a couple years now. Got hit with bad job market and nearing 50 makes it tougher to get hired. Plus I make just enough so that it doesn’t make sense for a lot of companies, not to mention after working here, I’m pretty jaded and cautious about where I’m going. I figure the only way is going to be to just do my own thing and transition, which is what I’m working on. Definitely not a skills issue as I know more about tech than the younger people they are hiring. Anyways, best of luck.
