No Union is not being laid off next maybe some buyouts but stop being bitter toward the union folks we didn’t it

Repost this guy is right Ha ha no they are offering a nice severance package to a small few union with Many decades under their belts .Its targeted their ready.But over all they are hiring field techs like crazy .Most areas that didn’t have fios are being built out it’s a decade long project.The 5g for the cell sites along with the new focus on business fiber will keep field techs very busy.I would say if anything the only union side that they maybe look to offer reduce head count that will not get replaced would be inside people like clerks and such.Unfortunately for any desk paper person they will consider you management at will .They will always look for ways to faze that out ,but hands on jobs may not make millions but are very dependable in the need .Most of the new generation do not want to do anything hands on .Especially with work from home being dangled in front of them for clerical work.So replacement of our extremely Aged work force with years and years of background will not be as easy as you think

AI will not take over outside work . VZ may shift to contractors but AI is not even an option . Offshoring is also not an option .

@OP It's almost laughable how little the average union member understands about what is happening. All center jobs, thousands of union jobs, will be automated in 5 years. You don't even need AI for this, the technology is already here today, but AI will accelerate it.

If you believe Dan's view on robotics, how hard is it to imagine Central Office based special purpose robots that can do everything a technician/engineer can do. Imagine an employee that can work without breaks save for charging? Now connect that robot to the information the centers currently send to the field and you realize how fast union jobs get eliminated. If that happens, your entire union based power is purely outside field techs.

Guess what is unique about every new technician hired today? They have zero job protection in the contract. They will surplus to get rid of everyone with no layoff clauses and hire new techs who they can let go when the rollout is done. This means the cast majority of what will be left of the unions in 5 years time will effectively be at-will employees because the unions sold them out years ago.

I am not gloating about this (as you appear to be about the folks recently laid off), but just stating the likely outlook. The unions are notoriously bad at adding any skills the company didn't pay them to attain. When the unions are impacted they will be the least prepared workforce entering an every shrinking market that would much rather hire contractors for specific work than union members that expect 30 year careers in a world that where that is ever-scarce. We are all easily replaced, it just follows a different order of operation. Good luck.

@ap bull. Well this strike for NY wont be bad because the union will pay your strike fund which is pennys but NY unemployment cam go in effect after 1 week. $800 a week. Us unioners can get by on that for a couple months

The union will be effected and the contract is going to be very different and Verizon will not back down. They already said CAP on pay meaning no more raises ,major changes to disability pay and as you know retirees benefits . We will strike and the company will not fold this time and a impasse will be declared meaning you show up under the implied contract of get fired . I am heavily involved in the union and this is really true . My guess is the union will tell us to work without a contract as long as possible forcing a lockout so then we can at least collect . No strike goes past 3 weeks due to the union having to pay us weekly . It will still be better then most but now is not the time to flex "union " .
