My manager opens the call first, and THEN sends me my review. I have zero opportunity to review it ahead of time. This is the way it's always been.
Any problems or "areas of concern" are surprises that are only learned during the review, many of which are demonstrably false or can be strongly refuted. Never an opportunity to be made aware of something that's wrong during the year, when action could be taken to correct something. My manager schedules 1 on 1's, but never shows up. All they are good for is blocking a timeslot on a schedule.
Then he always asks me to "acknowledge" the review before ending the call, saying "this just means that we did this review".
Clearly - CLEARLY - these reviews are absolutely NOT based on job performance. They are based on social standing with your manager.
The way they do these reviews is questionable. The best way to turn a good employee into a bad employee is to tell them that they're not doing a good job, without any possible supporting evidence.
