Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Should I take a position at a lower pay?

With all the bad news lately, I feel like I have no moral at O. I'm an engineering support in fusion U.S., and I've been fortunate enough to receive a job offer from another company on Friday , even though it comes with a 20 percent pay cut. In the past, I would never have considered making such a move, but the job market is quite concerning, and I'm worried there will be more layoffs.

Should I jump ship while I still can and take this job. A few friends told me absolutely!!!

@cm My personal experience at smaller firms:

  • Huge turnover. Few people stay around for more than 3 years.
  • The business owner doesn't trust anyone and assumes that all employees are ripping him off.
  • Mediocre benefits. Crummy insurance, less paid time off, etc. One place I worked expected us to come in the Friday after Thanksgiving,
  • Raises are close to non existent, which leads to high turnover.
  • Even less transparency than O. While it never happened to me, I know people who worked at places that closed their doors with no warning.
  • Lousy pay, even worse than O, as the OP pointed out. I've had offers from small firms that involved a non trivial pay cut like the OP. They assume that you are desperate to get out of your current job and will accept it.

Depends how old you are. If you have lots of years of service getting a package at Oracle would be better than getting a package at said lower paying company. Staying or leaving both have some risk.

While we complain about pay at O, especially the scarcity of pay raises, the truth is, as the OP documents, there are places worse than O, and I agree (I've worked at a few of them).

Should OP take the new job? Hard to say. The only thing that is certain is that the pay at the new job is a whopping 20% less. Will job security be better? Who knows? Will it be a more more satisfying job? Who knows? Will there be more US O layoffs soon? Who knows?

Ultimately it depends on what you realistically can afford. Can you take a 20% pay cut? Can you make life style changes that allow for a 20% pay cut? Be careful about thinking your various savings, etc. can help you float this since once in a position you have no idea when (or if) you will see pay raises, etc.

The other thing I always stressed with people on my team who were thinking about leaving (some stayed, some left) was to take a look at the overall benefits and job realities (as much as possible) for both positions. Oracle pay sorta su-ked (especially in terms of increases) but the benefits were pretty good and -- at least for me -- some of the flexibility in my position was very important for other things going on in my life.

In short it is not an easy or one size fits all type of question / answer.

We’ve already paid more than enough taxes in California?????? As tech workers, we’ve been Paying ~ 40% of our O Income in taxes for decades with zero benefits from the government.

Why don't we get free healthcare, free housing, free food stamps, free cash assistance plus on top of that, no income tax, no property tax, and no capital gains tax?????

I live in San Mateo County. What bothers me most is that we’re paying premium prices for law enforcement and public services but end up receiving Walmart-level quality in return LOL LOL LOL LOL

That happened to me. I jumped ship to another company and then they got bought out by a larger company, you can't win.

We’ve already paid enough taxes to CA. Universal Basic Income should go to all tech workers who’ve been paying high income taxes ~40% for decades.

Just imagine it: free healthcare, free housing, free food stamps, free cash assistance plus on top of that, no income tax, no property tax, and no capital gains tax. Who cares about pay cuts, H-1B visas, AI, or automation if we ,people, are finally supported?

What I really don’t like is paying a premium price for law enforcement and public services, only to get Walmart quality in return. LOL LOL LOL LOL

I wouldnt ask this on this page since everybody will tell you yes abandon the big brother no matter the circumstances. You have to know for yourself if you can afford 20 % down immediately and couldnt take more time to go interview somewhere else where there is no salary downgrade (negotiate). And also if there is certainty the new company will not have layoffs too. Which i dont think you can get anyway nowadays and thats why i wouldnt rush the jumping. But you know best :-)

Get away from that place and take a new opportunity - don’t waste more of your time for diving into outdated or internal (never used outside) technology.

Feeling taken advantage of is a common reaction when you accept a much lower salary at a smaller company than where you currently work, and this can affect both job satisfaction and self-worth. It's challenging to stay motivated and contribute meaningfully when salary does not reflect one’s expertise

My advice is to accept a pay cut if you will get the opportunity for more valuable knowledge. I struggled when I was part of the previous OCI layoffs because NOBODY wanted OCI at all, except maybe some of their golden customers that are not hiring here, but now I have skilled up and get more pay! It is worth investing in yourself.

Take it. That 20% wont matter. You have to also think about the experience you will have in the new job. Think of it as an investment in your future career. Oracle lifers, just like Google, Meta find it difficult to get placed. So take it my friend and embrace it.

I guess it boils down to how safe you feel at O, and how safe you think you will be at this other company. 20% less isn't ideal, but it's better than 100% less.

Absolutely take it. If only you have now chance to jump out from the sinking (with employees) boat, just do it. 20% pay cut is a less lost than stability, good management at work and your mental health.
