Return to Office

I heard a rumor today that a 5 DAY return to the office announcement is coming! Has anyone heard anything about this?

@6bt well, here’s what I think. Of course this is just my opinion. When we slide our cards to get into the building, there are reports that I know can be generated. If you’re not coming into the office and staying your shift, they will know it. I don’t know if you’ll be reprimanded or terminated but I’m sure there will be some form of repercussions. They can honestly tell you they don’t need you any longer. We are at will employees.

@5z0 unfortunately it will affect you. Sadly, corporations can do this. I’m not happy with it either but what can we really do about it?

Rumors are circulating that remote employees will also have to report into the office if they are within certain mile radius of an office. Not sure how this is going to be enforced.

@OP I can confirm that upper senior management have already started 5 days/week as mandated by Demchak. The full RTO for the rest in person employees will commence sometime in January. I don’t know how the full remote workers way before pandemic will be affected. There’s a lot of complaints from new hires claiming they never signed up for this although it’s in their contract agreement to work more than 3 days a week.

Heard a rumor of 3 days/week and possibly 5 days/week starting Jan 1. Haven’t seen anything from corporate. Everything has been heresy. Teams are gonna fold. WFH works. We’ve been able to release the new online banking to 11 million customers while mostly WFH and during a pandemic. Tech buildings are chaotic with numerous distractions. We’ve said it many times, open floor concept does not increase productivity. It does the opposite. PUSHBACK PUSHBACK PUSHBACK!!!

According to my manager in Technology, a communication was scheduled to be sent out this past Friday, but the manager-level meeting that afternoon to review the new policy was unexpectedly canceled due to pushback.

@13q where did you hear this? There have been multiple town halls and none have spoken of a 5x in office, if anything there has been conversation that WFH works and employees appreciate the work life balance it offers. Additionally, there have been countless jobs pre-COVID where wfh was already instituted… operational teams would be decimated, loan groups would go under and PNC doesn’t have the pull to attract JPMC or Citi level talent as their compensation package is way below market standards. I don’t really buy into this hype, specially as PNC just recorded yet another record QT earnings.
If you’re afraid, ask your manager but don’t follow this sh---y thread of unknowns and conspiracy theories

@472 Yes, this is true. An official announcement will happen in the coming days. I heard January 20th will be when this starts. I’m not sure if prior work arrangements will be honored.

Is this a rumor or is it for real that everyone is going back 5 days? What about WFH individual contributors? If My team is not colocated, will I still have to go in?

@2m8 This is what I would like to know too. There are many employees who are nowhere near the office. Are they going to lose their jobs over a forced RTO mandate?

Cafeteria staff was already told about being in 5 days week and cafeterias are preparing to go back to what they were. Unfortunately it is coming.

@13q How does this impact departments that were remote long before COVID? And what does this look like for people who have relocated and now there's no office near them?
I'm remote and I am honestly much more productive at home with no distractions as well as much faster internet. Plus I just don't want to have to buy dress clothes again. Ugh. Maybe they will compensate everyone with a pay increase? I know, I'm hilarious 😂.

It is true. Senior managers just got a notice yesterday that they must be in 5 days immediately.

There will be a follow up announcement soon that ALL employees will have to return to office 5 days per week starting January 1st.

In August when all the Regional Presidents were in Pittsburgh presenting results to Demchak he was asking why certain markets were below plan, and the RP’s used lack of in office attendance as an excuse for their poor performance and Demchak got upset. He wanted to make the change immediately in August, but HR told him he needed to work through a plan, mainly to get office space sorted out for the return.

Expect a follow up announcement some time in 4th quarter. Managers are starting to informally socialize the plan with their employees right now because they are worried about heavy turnover in certain areas (IT, Underwriting, Operations), which are all jobs that can be done at higher levels of productivity on a remote basis.

Essentially the job market is garbage thanks to Trump’s tariffs and Demchak is using that to bring people back before it’s too late.
