I'm going to date myself here, but...Do you remember back in the early 90's when the big push was to move from huge mainframes to a distributed "client-server" model? How about the subsequent push move everything to the web? And then the push to break up monolithic applications into micro-services?
And now, we're pushing to put everything on 'the cloud'? Just about every other industry has been chasing one application architecture after another. Our frantic rush out to the cloud is nothing different, and I fully suspect that in 5-10 years, we'll be rushing off to another architecture.
Bringing things closer to home... Remember the rushed implementation of CSI? How about the way-too-soon adoption of things like Model to Execution (M2E)? Or Model Driven Architecture (MDA)? Or Cloud Deliver Platform (CDP)? Or Application Authorization Framework (AAF)?
In each situation, leadership was sold a vision of a future where everything would be beautiful and unicorns would freely roam the earth. In each case, the manifested reality was nothing close to what was promised. By the time that was apparent, the folks who sold the concept, and the leaders that had bought into it, had all received their accolades, promotions, and bonuses, and they had all moved onto the next big concept, leaving in their wake a heaping pile of clean up work.
