In the 60's companies believed they had a moral obligation to take care of their employees.
This included pensions, health care benefits, and investing in the cities they operated in.
My how things have changed - todays corporate charter is much different.
"If you say, as an individual, 'My only interest is to maximize my advantages,' which is what they say at the corporate level, then you are a sociopath" -- Jeremy Grantham
The social contract between worker and employer is profoundly broken.
And you can see it - today, it was reported that wells fargo might get a new fine for failing to timely correct the mistakes of prior regime.

What this means is that employees do not feel compelled to be on the side of the people who pay their salary - its very telling that employees clearly feel the entire system is broken.
The bank does not care at all about the employees - this is why Wells Fargo is offshoring as many jobs as possible to India as fast as they possibly can.
See, Indian nationals living in India are not part of the American political system - they cant vote.
The mad dash of offshoring not only has the net effect of making the american worker poorer, but it also has the added bonus of silencing you - as your life style is such that to support what empire you personally have built, to continue to service your debt you'd have to have 2 or 3 menial jobs just to keep your head above water if you lost your job at the bank.
If you working all the time, you are unlikely to participate much in the political process or protests or anything of the like.
The owners - the executives and boards of companies like this - have a grand scheme to make sure that in America, only their political contributions and their voice are heard.
Meanwhile in China, they are passing "wealth distribution" laws to make sure the uber rich share their gains with the population.
That will never happen in USA - we are stuck in a system that preys upon its workers, silences them, enriches the already rich, and when the worker is no longer useful, discards them like a used paper bag.
A nation that abuses its workers like this is soon destined for the scrap heap of history - the French learned it the hard way.
America is young....but she too will learn some valuable lessons likely in the next election cycle.
