Yeah, unions and the GI bill created the middle class after the end of WW2.

Then the pill came along and women entered the workforce, adding income to the middle class.

Then came credit, for dishwashers, cars, vacations, and the middle class charged their way to stuff.

Unions and the GI bill (and a lot of other government benefits for vets) are considered, now sit down if you're prone to fainting, socialism.

America does best when we do somethings all together, and some things as entrepenuers, a mix.

That said, yeah, we're not really a capitalist society at all anymore, corporations own our polls on both sides.

More on the right, but way too much on the left, too, and that's been true since the Clinton's triagluated their way to DC.

This post is the absolute pinnacle of the propagandizing of our country that's going on right now. Where to start? While complaining of capitalism, making claims of 'shrinking middle class' etc etc, you have to ignore the fact that people have more 'stuff' and an easier time than any other in history- directly because of Free Market Economics. Market economics certainly isn't perfect- but nothing is. The evidence is strikingly clear that Free Markets have done more to lift people out of poverty than any other system. Period. It's glaringly obvious to anyone who actually studies. Nearly everyone who posts this kind of anti-capitalism rubbish HAS NEVER TAKEN A SINGLE ECONOMICS COURSE. I could go on forever (because I have actually studied) but I want to point out to the Marx commenters who laughingly agree that capitalism destroys itself- that Marxist-based governments have ALL destroyed themselves (and China is in-progress) and the ones standing are ALL CAPITALIST. Marx, amazingly, made enormous mistakes in his assessment of capitalism, completely NOT understanding the role of the business owner, nor the removal of incentive that his 'system of equality' ruined. Thus Lenin put a society of 45 million people in abject poverty in TEN SHORT YEARS. And because you can't incent people with extra reward for extra work, their system devolved rapidly into FORCED LABOR and MU---R as punishment for laziness. You people who support Marxist ideas are LITERALLY ID--TS that have absolutely no knowledge of history. Ugh.

We are living in the era of corpratism NOT capitalism. We are post capitalism now.

Corpratism is essentially returning us back to the feudal system. There are three classes now: 1) The unimaginably wealthy, 2) the Political class, and 3) The Serf class.

Ummm, no. "Raw unbridled capitalism" doesn't have 1/10th of the labor laws we have, a minimum wage, an EPA, an income tax, social security / medicare / medicaid, corporate taxes, OSHA, etc. The USA hasn't had anything even close to capitalism since the 1960s, but it really all started down hill with the income tax.

Quixotically, as more and more government intrusion is put in place, things get worse, and the government claims that still more government is actually the answer. It's like if you had a heart attack and went to the hospital and they fed you nothing but bacon double cheeseburgers and curly fries. The "cure" is the disease.

Where manufacturing takes place in the modern global economy is a much bigger issue than any one President. When it "started" isn't especially relevant in anything but agenda driven narratives that are superficial at best. The root causes have much more to do with where China's economy was in it's own development, regulatory regime, and worker skills vs cost. While all of those were trending 'pro manufacturing' in China, the United States was headed in the decidedly opposite direction on all fronts. Rising wages + ever growing piles of regulation from the fed/state/city level, huge risk due to the litigious nature of our culture, etc. simply made it economically non-viable to manufacture many things here, especially labor intensive items. The US still manufactures a lot of things, they just do it with machines these days. In any event no one President started the ball rolling on increasing the costs of doing business here. It took a bunch of them to ki-l the golden goose, and ironically most of these moves were done to "help" workers, and ended up costing them their jobs instead (thanks government!). It was Nixon that started the EPA, so it's not like the GOP is especially pro-business / manufacturing either.

In any case, no enviro regs, no lawsuits, cheap labor, cheap land, a capable workforce, and an unentitled labor force in China meant that manufacturing was always going to go there. Sure, an administration or two could try protectionist schemes, but those often do more harm than good and over the long term never really have the desired results.

If it makes anyone feel better this kind of thing happens to every country that becomes a manufacturing power, and someone cheaper will come along and knock China off it's roost once costs there rise enough, and they will. The US has also been on the other end of this treatment as well, when our manufacturing boomed in the 19th/20th century, people in other countries were saying 'they took errrr jobs'.

Anyway, there's nothing especially deep or 'educated' about pointing a finger at any one person in regard to this issue.

Get your facts straight. Manufacturing jobs started going to China under Reagan. IT jobs started going to India under Bush. It started happening long before Obama appeared on the scene.

But we know that doesn’t fit your talking points you were given that we’re just more lies. People don’t believe sh!t just because you keep repeating it, at least educated people don’t.

Suggestion - quit and find a job somewhere else. You have the opportunity and freedom to leave and go elsewhere instead of claiming victim, victim, victim.

That's what happens when the Walmart crowd is incentivized to have 5-6 kids and those with brains don't reproduce, you're living the outcome.

Medicare is one of the better run healthcare around. If they would have just expanded that rather than the compromise care the GOP Congress forced on them, we would have been better off. There are also price controls.

There is no monopoly in healthcare, BTW. There is also no regulation and price fixing. The policies are offered through HMOs. So the dr-g companies and HMOs are still running the show and therefore pricing still high.

Over the last 40-50 years the government has taken over more and more of the healthcare industry, and it's gotten much more expensive over that period of time. That's not a coincidence. Monopolies never made prices go down, ever, especially government monopolies. These are the guys with $600 hammers and $2000 toilet seats, and people think they are going to get a good deal from them.

Also, if you really think there's more disparity between the rich / working poor now vs the late 1800s / early 1900s, you need to read more about Rockefeller and Carnegie and that era in general. Working 60+ hours a week for pitiful wages and dying young (often on the job) were the norm back then. We have it easy by comparison, very very easy, it's not even close.
