Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Public Affairs/Corp Comms - how's everyone doing?

Are we finally going to rip off the Band-Aid on months and months of uncertainty? I'm hearing the time has finally come (or finally coming this month, I guess).

How's everyone feeling about their prospects of staying in the new COE structure? Is anyone really feeling safe/confident about a soft landing here?

Maybe once the dust settles my ulcer will go away.

In my opinion, anyone who is working effectively with a great attitude and work ethic in Corp Communications or Marketing should be all be combined under Meetings and Events. It should then be renamed oc course, but the key concept here is to eliminate the team members with he bad attitudes. A few bad apples do spoil the barrel.

@7tiz - as a former M&E team member, I call BS. Some of my peers were the most stressed out people I knew and burnout was no joke. Try having a family with the non-stop travel, relentless hours, and often incredibly demanding and ungrateful clients.

It's a fun job for a while, but the burnout factor can get to the sunniest, happiest, most cheerful people.

If you all could stop complaining about your lives and careers long enough to step outside, see the sunrise and smell the roses you might want to then consider adopting a cheery attitude.

We hire cheerful people, and lots of them because we are as busy as we can possibly be. We have no staff cuts in Meetings and Events, tons of unspent R&D money from the last two years and from the looks of it, not enough staff to visit and test new venues for offsite corporate pow-wows, marketing events and travel.

If you have a sunny disposition, love people, love organizing events and can work your tail off for months on end on the road with little or no rest then you should check us out. We are hiring.

Why is Corp Comm getting cut while Marketing is hiring ? Why not just move some people over? It would be great for morale.

T-minus 2-3 days...I hope you've polished up your resumes and are already interviewing for better opportunities.

Good luck - hopefully I'll see you on the other side. Or not. I know plenty of colleagues who are waiting out the news in hopes of a severance package before they move on to new pastures.

OS was an id--t who leveraged his WSJ and Ford roles into his Peter principled role at wells, and every protege he had at wells was equally or more weak and he knew it. His calls, his lack of leadership, and his general laziness and elitism caught up with him. And he was clueless when Stumpf had to testify to congress. I have never been more embarrassed by a supposed communications program as I was as OS failed his company and his team.
Then we got JR who was absent for over a year and then tried to make up for it in a month. Then we got the crooked twit from Chicago who then hired the incompetent botoxed bleached blonde.
Comms needs a real leader. And so does this company, and so many of its other business lines.

There will be no soft landings, my friend. My guess is that we’re in for a very bumpy ride. I mean all the elements are there: hubris, ineptitude, layoffs, new op model and re-org. Yeah, BR is a hack but no more so than OS or JR. OS created a bloated mess of a team that was too big and too scared of everybody in C-suite. And let’s not even talk about the way they mishandled the sales practice mess. JR? Nice guy in the wrong job. Neither of them wrote poetry.

BR wants to do “consumer lifestyle” PR? Does she understand that a story on popsugar.com won’t get us out from under the asset cap?

Let’s call a spade a spade: as someone who was at the company in a very senior role during the time of the sales practices scandal, the inept response had nothing to do with communications. It had to do with the leaders at the top of the company (JS, TS, Shrewsberry, Hardison 🙄) who refused to acknowledge reality and do the right thing. Corporate communicators were screaming until they were blue in the face. Then they let OS go as a sacrificial lamb.

For you arguing about “whence”.
The word does rhyme with “Pence”.
I wish he was here,
In this another bad year,
Cuz our CEO and our US President are both so dense.

A reasonable education is one wherein English words like “whence” cease to be perceived as elitist.

Like the one most Americans receive in high school.

Anybody who objects to a word like “whence” is simply revealing how intimidated they are by those with reasonable educations.

If someone uses “whence” I bet they also toss out words like “equity”, “justice” and “racist” to try to show how impressed people should be with them.
Lots of a-holes on this board and at this company.

Nutshell: still, no one knows what's going on. May 20 is the date. Some people kinda given advance warning, as they are vying for very few roles in the COE structure. Others, if not invited to apply for a COE role, will either get terminated May 20 or be told they are safe and mapped to a LOB. It's a $*!& show. No one is excited, motivated or believe this this new "structure"

Look, the fishing is good in Corporate Comms. Incredibly expensive area to run in light of such low productivity and low quality. It is unclear how this grew into such a tangled mess. The good point is that it is easy to understand really easy to replace with a handful of pros. It stands out for cost cutting like no other unit.

Corp Comms became over-inflated with a lot of untrained talent that somehow managed to make it into management level jobs. THAT is why the retail bank scandal was so mismanaged. There were plenty of us raising the flag on how poorly that was handled, but NO ONE in a manager role was either willing or able to listen and consider a more effective approach (appears same was true in many LOBs in the bank given they kept putting internal boys club members in the CEO seat).

True talent sits/sat untapped during crisis and recovery unable to do anything except watch it burn. The trend continues under BD and BR. The top communicators are leaving in droves because they've had enough.

I'm out soon enough. I just wish I'd had the stones to leave sooner. This place has been a mess for years.

OK, fair enough, so…. “Why have employees been reduced to scouring the internet for information about the company they work for for the past 8 years of radio silence from Corp Comms?”

So, anyone in Corp Comms want to issue a Corp Communication for once? We are all eyes and ears awaiting you excellent communications skills.

Because the head of Corp Comms gave pink slips to internal communications employees.

If Corp Comm is so incredible where were they during the fake account scandals? I don’t remember any particularly edifying communications, internal or public.

Why are employees reduced to scouring the internet for information about the company they work for?

Sure, we get the occasional self-congratulatory email about charitable contributions, and teamworks is divided into sections, but how many people does that take? Especially since there’s nothing there but fluff.

Internal communication is the worst of any company I’ve ever worked for, and our reputation is in the gutter years after the scandals broke.

I doubt if we’ll notice much difference once the big “talent drain” occurs.

The fact Daley hired you in this role is so scary.

Massive talent miss. BR has no respect for the team or how hard it is to do real company comms. Heard it was hard to find someone to take that job and it shows. Hard to imagine a worse more inept choice. And be prepared to do way more with less.
