Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Brace yourself for endless Gaslighting

As uncertainty continues and layoffs begin to ramp up, be on the alert for gaslighting and manipulation from executives and leadership.

A "Gaslighter" tells you blatant lies with a straight face. Once gaslighter tell you a whopper of a boldfaced lie, then you're less sure what is actually true the next time.

Don't listen to their words, watch what they do. Do their actions match their words? Concerned about employees? Promising transparency? There will be lots of corporate communications talking about "tough decisions... and how difficult this is for us" —Yeah, not really. It's the old "I feel really bad that I'm firing you"– (but not bad enough to do anything about it).

Scott Powell conference call today — moderate "gaslighting" – no helpful details of course. Lots of talking to fill up the time without actually saying anything much.

Agree that Managers (the foot soldiers who have to carry the orders) are in a tough spot.

It's the high level disinformation from executives that is the worst Gaslighting —nonsensical false narratives with too much to try to reconcile, designed to confuse/obfuscate, rather than communicate.

If I were highly paid executive, I would probably be very good at rationalizing this sort of Cognitive Dissonance (i.e., simultaneously holding contradictory /incompatible beliefs).

So good luck, Managers in trying to explain things away from the Gaslighters calling the shots.

I would say 75% of managers do not know how to communicate honestly and effectively. That is the reason some discussions come off as gaslighting.
Nobody wants to have that conversation with someone they work with, that is hard enough. But if you don't have good communication skills (open) then its over before the first word out of their mouths.

Sometimes cuts really are just hard. I don't have any specifics for my team yet, but with numbers being tossed around, it wouldn't surprise me if I have to cut 1-2 people in the next several months. I have a good team and I don't have dead weight. If I have to make cuts, it will s— and it will be a hard conversation, as none of them deserve it.

The Teamworks/HR flacks are no doubt working overtime on fawning tributes, humble-brags and shameless hagiography for top leadership and Great Leader - Chainsaw Charlie rebranded as Saint Charles.
