Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

The Hard Truth

The reality is that if you got a 1 or 2, if you want a smidgen's chance to save your job, with forced rankings you've got to bump off someone your manager likes more than you. You probably don't have a lot of time to do it, if it isn't already too late.

If you get a 1 or 2 – start looking for a new job. Some is just a numbers game, some is that's what they think of your performance. the whole reason they went back to numbers is to have some criteria of who they'll get rid of when the axe falls.

From a leadership standpoint – a 1 or 2 shouldn't be a surprise. Said people should have been told their performance isn't up to snuff well before seeing it on a review.

If you got a 1 or a 2 you aren’t good at your job period. It takes a lot of incompetence to get a 1. If you did, you need to have a conversation with your manager about how they can help you meet the expectations of your role. If not, I wouldn’t worry about being laid off, I’d worry more about being fired for not being competent in your role. #truths

I went through a similar layoff exercise in a previous organization. Big guy comes in, brings all his friends from his old company, lays off about a fifth of his org structure. To stay, you had to have a particular blend of psychopathy, narcissism and Dunning-Kruger effect.

I got a 3 this time in WF. I'm not safe (no one is) but I can tell you for sure it's not worth fighting it if you got a 1 or a 2, which is what I got at my old job before I left. No matter how much you improve, no matter how much you escalate it or even decide to take them to court, you'll most probably be out. You have to decide if you're better off fighting it, or applying your time and energy in finding another job. If the job you find doesn't pay as much as your current one, take it for now, then keep looking. I've gone through this myself. Stay strong and don't take it personally.

What if you’ve got evidence you worked your butt off with no prior complaints and you’re a 1 or 2 and you’re the only minority in the group? Let the fun begin diversity right.

Numbers mean nothing... it's politics.

I got a 3, but was gunning for a 1 or a 2.

Go figure......

Am retirement eligible (18 + 59) and would take a package if offered. Otherwise I'll just keep coasting for as long as they want to keep paying me.

That’s not the reality at all. What’s needed if you got a 1 or 2 is documented evidence that you’re achieving the objectives set forth by leadership.

If you’re not, then you need to make the necessary changes to improve your performance.

The days of skating by and not being accountable are gone.

BNYM vet here. If that's what you think, good luck to you.

Disagree. They’re going by line of business, tech/retail/ops probably the first to get slammed. There, it won’t matter what you’ve been rated but certainly 1 or 2s will be first to go. If you’re in a profitable front office role 1 or 2 isn’t a death sentence right away and you have time to turn around.
