Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Sixty Years Ago AT&T Employed One Million Workers!

In the 1950's and 60's the mighty AT&T provided good, stable middle class jobs to one million American workers. Now Randall's AT&T has barely a quarter of that working in high stress conditions dreading to find out if they get axed the next week.

AT&T used to be a force for technological progress and advancement in our nation. Now AT&T is so understaffed and mismanaged it can't even write it's own software or operate it's own cloud!

We were called Ma' Bell because we took good care of our customers. Now customer care is outsourced to India and our customers hate us!

This company is most definitely heading in the wrong direction. Things need to change fast - starting with acquiring competent leadership at the top! And no I DON'T mean putting Stanky in charge!

Back in the days of regulated monopoly profits were limited, and they were always flush with cash and able to employ lots of people needed to run this business with no technology. As tech came about, people went away. 1996 the flood gates opened and let the Bell's compete and do what they wished with profits.

We were a monopoly in those days! We were limited by how much profit we could make. Totally different today....what the government wanted, to break it up. So this is what you got.

My guess is the OP is a union tech or former union tech who really has no clue about AT&T’s business strategy or anything about the company in general beyond his/her very limited job duties. Just a dumb post in general.

SBC has always been about putting a little gloss on a t–d and insisting its employees sell it as a high end first rate product.

Fill AT&T in with GE, HP, GM, etc. Times are not the same.

Ok genius - let's bring back switchboard operators. Who wants to buy cell service that doesn't provide for dialing. And another thing, the Bell System included Verizon so don't conveniently forget their headcount. And then there was the manufacturing arm, Western Electric, which became Lucent, acquired by Alcatel.

The old Bell System ran landline telephony. That is obsolete, largely replaced by cell phone, particularly in residential situations. There are no linemen running lines to my cell phone.

According to Elliott, Randall has too much headcount and is not running things as efficiently as Verizon. It is beginning to be a bit late for Elliott to field a slate of alternative directors in time for the April meeting, but if Randall still wants to steer the ship, he better run things as efficiently as Verizon.

Very well put! Long term thinking is just dead in this company. They are too busy cooking the books and shifting financial obligations to the next quarter, that they forget how this company began.

All of the systems in the company are totally and hopelessly hindi’d up. There are bugs in all of our internal systems, not to mention customer facing apps. I can easily demonstrate repeatable bugs in our iPhone app, and even in our directv screensaver. I must spend 20% of my work day on this type of overhead.

They have absolutely no interest in supporting the middle class in this country. They’d rather support those in India or the h1-b’s here who export tons of cash in remittances.

Funny how so many companies want the middle class to give their business, but do not reciprocate with the jobs. I recently canceled the Sirius radio subscription in my car because I view it as the type of thing that we only spend money on when times are good and we have confidence in our jobs. But it’s the type of thing we cut out when we need to cut costs because of, or in preparation of, a layoff. And when I called, I got an offshore call center trying to keep me from canceling. It made me even more determined. Ironic that T is doing the same thing. K–ling the middle class while simultaneously being in the business of selling things people cut first when times are tough. Satellite TV, premium television channels, high end cellular service, etc.

That's a nice compliment to a regulated industry. Not sure it has anything to do with T as it is now.
