Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Layoffs in ATO - what's going on?

Does anyone have any information regarding the layoff status in ATO? The last thing I heard was in December from a town hall and I haven't heard anything since and it's already mid-January.
Another rumor I'm hearing is that there will be layoffs at the manager level (L3s and above?) coming.

Some of the folks outsourced are now back working in their old job and same work but instead for the outsourced company not T. How does that happen?

In the past it has been that when someone leaves, their position is not backfilled. At least that's been my experience in ATO. Sounds like they are changing their tune in some instances.

I think the "may or may not" be laid off is just the new code word for "laid off." They probably just want to minimize disruption until your boss gets around to giving you the walking papers.

The BMO (Business Wireless) are the Masters of the Universe for firing (Surplus, MVO and Rebadge) and re-org;ing, only to rehire and promate back in the same number of people they let go. They in effect maintain a zero population headcount loss. I've always been perplexed at this oddity. And, at that, they have been losing market share to T-mo, Verizon and even Sprint steadily for at least the last 5 years. Their promos, Bo Gos, Features and Services along with bundling and whatnot, just plain doesn't work. But boy can they ever fire and hire and reorg like a pro.

What's going on you ask? Layoffs are what's going on and they're going to keep going on, so we all better get used to the fact that the beast is still not satisfied. Got it?

BACK IN 2015 - 16 most engineers in the Premier Client Group segment with 20 years of service were impacted, 4 years later in our unit all engineering positions are effectively outsourced, that....may be the reason AT&T accomplishing sh–, Talent left long ago, just temporary people work here now.

The 10 AM CST Fea meeting was for "may or may not" be laid off. The 11 AM CST meeting was for the rest, who are "not to be laid off this round."

Fea's organization (ATO) just had a pair of back-to-back meetings, just like last year, with the first meeting apparently for those who "may or may not" be laid off (last year, they were told they were definitely laid off... I have only one report of the "may or may not" this year, so perhaps the person misunderstood?), and the second for those who are definitely not to be laid off this round.

Fea said 3% of employees are to be laid off this round, hinted that layoffs would generally be from the areas of the business that are shrinking, and said that targeted employees have 60 days left on payroll.

"Think some misunderstood. Last year they let people go in my department in ATO. No MVO. They were let go. About 10 total. They were also at varying stages of thier career (6-30 years). Since then they have hired 4 people to back fill those let go."

10 minus 4 = 6 still gone. Where did the 4 people who back fill come from? If they are new employees they get less benefits / pay. If they transfer from other parts of the company, perhaps that area is laying off. Either way, still reductions and lower cost. I understand you think it is disorganized, but consider it is a huge company. If you think they should be "smart" and just ask your boss if reductions are needed in your group, what do you think your boss will say? They just cut wherever they can, and backfill as needed. If you think they can just trust their employees to admit where the slack is, thing again.

Outsourced to TechM former AT&T employees vacation time is same as AT&T vacation time, for the first 2 years. We are getting a retirement bonus (pro-rated for 2.5 months) in Jan for money that we would have gotten in 401K match and pension contribution every year. As weird as it is to being an employee of another company, it's a lot less stressful than worrying about FMPs that is announced every year.

This is the recipe Sprint followed. Good luck. As for Sprint the best People in the industry wont work for them unless pay is double the norm. Maybe not even then. Their reputation precedes them.

@12YcXtyH-1kyo no AT&T employee who went to Tech M had their salary increased. Their vacation time will be honored but I believe only for 1 year, they are losing a few things here & there. And the contractors had their salaries reduced. Outsourcing screwed a lot of people.

“I agree with @12YcXtyH-skp, isn't the whole purpose of MVO's to reduce % headcount but then they go back and hire the same %. Then its a reduction of older costlier employees. Flipping the company to a newer generation“

Wish this site was around when I took a job at att because if I knew that was what they were doing I would ran far away. What a cesspool. Glad I don’t deal wit att anymore now once I get our phones out of wireless they will be totally out of our lives. Why do I always feel slimed when dealing with att.

Think some misunderstood. Last year they let people go in my department in ATO. No MVO. They were let go. About 10 total. They were also at varying stages of thier career (6-30 years). Since then they have hired 4 people to back fill those let go. Others who were told they were to be let go were also told they could stay in the same job. This time around there were takers of the MVO. No layoff anoncement yet be we have been told that these positions will be back filled. So why was there even a surplus? It is like no one has a clue what is going on.

I'm in ATO, and today (Sunday, Jan 12) I got an email announcing a call on Monday (Jan 13) where my VP will discuss 1Q plans "to reduce costs." Anyone else get the same? Monday may be the announcement, at least for some.

Once someone signs that letter not to sue for age discrimination to get the severance it is full steam ahead to back fill with someone younger and cheaper.

"How do you layoff employees (about 6 in 2019) and then post job openings a year later?" That just blew my mind that I saw this happen. WTH - this clearly shows they have no clue what they are doing and is why I left. it was a joke. What is sad they don't have a clue what they are doing and unfortunately it is effecting people's career. Glad I don' t deal with that any more.

"I'm in ATO and we had a few MVO takers. Word is they will be posting jobs to fill the vacancies. This place is just a mess. How do you layoff employees (about 6 in 2019) and then post job openings a year later?"

They backfill the positions with new employees, making less salary.
