Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

There is a pattern to these layoffs

I’ve noticed a pattern - it seems they hit one dept one month, hit another the next month, then a third dept the next month - so once per quarter your group has a FMP. It’s been working this way for a couple of years now, sometimes big cuts sometimes small but it’s constant. It seems to me that it’s a way of getting rid of older folks to make room for millennials. And the new tactic is to offer you a job in a distant city because they know most people won’t want to uproot and move - and they also are telling people to go to distant collaboration zones knowing most won’t do it.

@10hjf1E1-3xxp hit the nail on the head.

Ironic they’re moving them to Austin since that is not a designated collaboration zone

They've been doing these tricks for years.

Pick a group, move their work half-way across the country knowing most of them aren't going to uproot their entire life* to keep doing the same silly job. Presto ! Voluntary separations.

*You betcha. Let me start a new mortgage in a new home ( and tell my other half she has to quit her job so we can move ) every time T decides to play musical chairs with the job I do. Not.

A more interesting pattern is the fact they seem to be targeting those who are grandfathered into the Pension Plan*. The faster they can get rid of those folks in addition to buying out retirees who opted for the annuity vs lump sum, the less money they'll have to keep in the Pension Plan to cover it all.

*EEOC if you're listening, this means they're targeting their older workforce.
