Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

A Level 1 Manager’s Thoughts

Let me start off by saying that I’m very pro union. I was craft for my first 7 years with the company & only moved to management after they closed my center down & moved it out of state & I needed to remain local to work. Myself and a few of my work peers have been dispatched out today because we were all assigned to locations within 50 miles of our homes. My coworkers with out of state assignments are just at home on Standby.

I’m glad the union is striking because as a manager, I see everyday how this company will screw you over if you don’t have representation. With that said, I’m livid that I have to be here on a Sunday for 12 hours while the company pretends that they have qualified people ready to do the jobs of techs. All we did was watch about 10 videos and take one class on climbing a ladder. We didn’t even tie the ladder up. I have no clue how to do any of this. I’m a staff manager who sits in an office all day looking at spreadsheets. What do I know about splicing fiber??

We all know that this is a joke and all it does is piss everyone off at AT&T for playing games with all of its employees livelihoods. It’s a dangerous game to play because if any one of us gets hurt while we play tech for 4 days, imagine how that would play out.

As much as I don’t want to do this, stand strong CWA. We’ll try not to mess things up too much before you all get back.

“””I order an average of 3k of material a day for a work center of 20 technicians. If they’re sitting in their trucks all day then there must be a ton of telephone equipment being dumped somewhere.”””

A day?? That’s not excessive...yeeeah.

Personally I’m ready to remain out on strike for months. I have plenty of money saved and I’m on wife’s insurance which is much better than att’s I waived att’s lousy insurance years ago. My biggest complaint has been getting time off work so I hope this strike goes into extra innings so I can finally get projects done around the house. F this company.

It's time to fight back. This Company makes Billions each quarter while raising the Medical high enough to offset any raises. The grievance process is broken. Time to take a stand.

Field techs get 30 minute video training also. Everyone knows that the only way to learn how to install and troubleshoot ethernet, t1’s, gpon or any other special circuit is to figure it out on your own. Get used to it.

Also, their health insurance coverage will be suspended on 9/1 if they continue without a break. It goes month by month.

I wouldn’t worry about it to much. It will definitely be over on Wednesday night and they will be back at work on Thursday. This ULP strike and its duration were very strategic. They might be able to do another short one later down the line and for a different reason, but this one will end as planned. They have to be careful as any ULP strike activity that becomes serialized/pattern based is not protected by Federal law and those that participate can be permanently replaced.

I’m a level 1 manager being deployed to work as a digital tech today. I don’t blame the union for standing up for themselves, but I do blame AT&T for forcing us to do a job we’re not trained for (despite corporates claims) with the expectation that we can simultaneously do our real job. I’m in sales, and the last week of the month is crucial to my business and hitting my numbers, a quota I’m still expected to hit while spending 10+ hours in the field as a technician for who knows how many days. Morale is low my friends.

@xia, “if you‘re not confidently trained sit in the truck until quitting time.” Now that might be the best place you could be....the word you were searching for (you uneducated twit) was Competently trained, good grief! The person who trains you need not be confident but he sure as hell better be competent!!

" All we did was watch about 10 videos and take one class on climbing a ladder. "

Don't take it personally man. We get the same amount of training too. If we're lucky, we'll get a .pdf file on how to turn something up. If we're lucky.

The last time I actually had " formal " training on how to maintain the equipment I'm responsible for ?

Put it this way. . . . we were still called SBC and Whittacre was still in charge.

Thanks for the objective viewpoint. It's always nice to see managers that have a reasonable attitude to those that work for them.

Thanks for an honest perspective from the managers side of things. We all know the company tries to lie to the public saying they have all these trained workers which is simply not true! If CWA would hold out for a longer strike they would break The T’s back after a week or so....they can only push back Appointments so far before a customer backlash begins!!

Retired splicer here.....went out for 3 weeks in 83.....CWA gave us weekly food vouchers...got back to work and my truck was destroyed....managers in the field playing techs was a joke even back then

Please be thankful that AT&T has eliminated the requirement to provide the company a 24-hour notification, before a first level can use one (1) guaranteed day off per year.

@10IFsbIo-mgu,

Here is a level 1 manager showing his support for you and the rest of the union and you attack him and call him names? Seriously , what’s wrong with you ? We don’t need immature childish babies like you in the union or at our company.

Thank you for your honest post and for supporting us craft employees. Most of us know and understand that level 1, even level 2 managers are out every day in a bad spot with At&t. You are told to write us up for the most frivolous reasons and If you don’t , you put your own livelihood on the line. So thank you for taking the time to show your support and please ignore the trolls and the immature ones who say otherwise.
