Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Buyout

Our office has heard that any new buyout offers will have a increase amount of $8000 per year of service versus $2200 and they will add 5 years of service. This rumor is spreading fast and please can anyone shed any light to this. I think it’s ridiculous but please help

Some are ready to go. If an offer comes out, a lot will leave, if not, then most will stay another 4 years.

Zes, FYI I did hear the company and Union were talking which I found strange, since there’s no need to talk about any eisp. Soo many there is some truth to this, but the union will not let the company offer what ever it likes without getting something in return.

The union has in the past not let oversubscribers go on an eisp. Because the company would not replace them.

If the union’s primary concern is one of longevity in telecom circle, they would not have capitulated on different tiers of members. This divide and conquer route is the death knell of any union given enough time. Maybe they’ll give up on telecom as their main source of dues, as it’s a diminishing source of funding, and look to other industries, allowing their loyal members to leave with a little better than otherwise would be. There’s a lot of naysayers here (ZES, 3TBL, 3SXG, 3PAT, 3LLN, 2CTR, 2BDI, 2JZT, KDE) but I could see the union leadership continue in being loyal to their long-time members, many taking it themselves as suggested earlier, and looking to new avenues, as well as downsizing for the tome being, to maintain revenues, rather than hurting members financially.

ZES, not sure I agree. If the company wanted to clean house, and I mean, really clean house, to pave the way for contractors and three year temps, a VERY good offer would need to be put on the table. Otherwise, why not just stay intil end of contract.? OT in my area’s been good, had my best year yet, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

You also said you can’t see the union agreeing to a can’t say no offer. I can’t see the union openly bucking their members financial well-being by rejecting an offee, especially if the rank and file were privy to what was being proposed. In the age of the Internet, it’s tough to keep a lid on things like that.

Additionally, a lot of the people who are union reps would also be taking any lucrative buyout so, even if you have a dim view of their motivations, one I don’t agree with, it would be a win for them too, IMHO. Have a little faith in people to do the right thing Brother. Peace.

This is ZES and of course I would love a massive mega EISP super ISP! But first people have been leaving without any EISP offers the past couple of years. Secondly, I can't see the union agreeing to let thier ranks and coffers be decimated by "a can't say no offer". I think enough people will take the enhanced EISP without further enticement. It works out roughly the same $ as managements 60 weeks pay and bonus

Whenever you ask a union rep about an eisp, they get a look on their face like they bit into a lemon. They DO NOT want anyone to leave! They DO NOT care if you’re getting a good package! They only care about dues!

But you said that there is “no way” the union will let that happen, you getting a bit of extra money after your 30 hard years of work. If you trult believe what you wrote, can you be for that?

This is ZES. I am a 30 plus year CWA member. I am very much in favor of the union, all unions. Having said that the union will not be glad to see their ranks and union dues plummet by say 20%. The last contract states that the company has the right to make up to an enhanced EISP offer for employees once a year and anything beyond an enhanced EISP must be negotiated.

A buyout would have to be realllllly nice to have people give up 4 years pretty much guaranteed.

Unions demise was the 2003 contract when they basically gave up future hires and drew a line separating new hires from the rest of the pack . Now temp 3 year deals are the way to go and if they become permanent they don’t have the same protection anyways .

its a fact that in previous buyouts the union was against them. as others said less members less cash and that's all they care about, survival. the union know its dying and is trying to slow down the bleeding.

They union has your back alright....now bend over. The union does not want you to leave because they will get less dues. It’s all about the money. How can you not see that? It’s like talking to a wall, your minds already made up and the facts aren’t going to change that.

WOW, the antiunion trolls are pouncing all over this one.

They will never understand unionists.

They just don’t get it.

The Union has your back, and is not going to s---erpunch you at the end of your loyal trek.

Ain’t gonna happen.

I’ve seen the union protect people who do not deserve a job at Verizon. They’ve gotten fired for good reason and the union gets their jobs back. Some have been fired multiple times for the same thing and still the union gets their job back. There was a time when people took pride in their work and doing a “union” job meant doing it safe and doing it it right. Today’s people are entitled and feel as though the company owes them...even with only 10-15 years of service. They act as if the union is their get out of jail free card and that doing a union job means screwing the company as much as you can....and the way the union fights for these parasites, it’s what is expected. I’ve seen good workers sold out for a “favor” down the road. If you think there is no such thing as union corruption, I’ve got some swamp land to sell you in Florida. Don’t get me wrong, the union is needed and is why we have a voice, good working conditions and good pay...but I’ve been here long enough to see the dark side of the union also. The union is a business, straight and simple...and you are a number.

If it’s actual union members here questioning the motives of union locals in a disparaging light, you should be ashamed. The men an women who have represented me, and stuck by my side, deserve better. Give them the benefit of your doubt. They’ve earned that loyalty over the years.

That being said, this thread actually reeks of anti-union troll droppings.

No Local in their right mind would stab their own members in the back, and expect loyalty to continue on BAU.

@2jzt, are you seriously claiming that if the company were to announce Monday that they are planning on offering every union member, say, $1 mil to leave, that the Union response would be to object and block it? I’m calling BS. Under your crazy scenario, the Union would be decertified in no time by p-ss-d off members.

Your argument makes no sense at all.

Union doesn’t want to see people leaving , they are a business . And $2200 per year isn’t enough to leave especially with 4 years guaranteed

re: 2jzt ... absolutely correct. Everyone should remember the Union, any Union, is a business at its very heart. It needs funds to support its organization.

No one needs to doubt for a moment that any Union would fight a company that was offering a lucrative offer that would in the end diminish the Union ranks.

The diminishing of ranks will happen soon enough due to the non-protected employees hired after I believe 2006. I would expect as well that if Verizon moved their corporate office to Dallas the Union clout of NY would greatly diminish. Union would still be there but NY pols would have very little leverage over the company. IMO

The union is definitely against an eisp....that’s why the company had to fight for the right to offer one every year, if they so desire. The union cares more about the number of members, not the members themselves. More members equals more dues. The union is against anything that would entice the retirement of a dues paying member. If you think they care more about you then the money you pay them, you are sadly mistaken. You are nothing more than a cash cow for the union, and they are against putting you out to pasture.

@2ank, zes was actually incorrect when he said no way will an enhacement be approved by the Union.

In response to the OP speculating about an enhanced offer, zes said, and I quote, “No way will that happen. Anything beyond an enhanced ISP has to be negotiated with the union.”

How do you determine zes meant “No way that will happen”? IMO, he was indicating it would be shot down by the union. I instead believe the union would be open to it, because it benefits their members.

Zes. Is actually correct. It would have to be negotiated with the union. Every union member knows that. So you dont know what the fudge your talking about .he was Not saying they would tell the company they wouldnt except. But it has to be negotiated per the contract. Dont believe call your union . If you are even union !!!!!!!!!!!!

How about $1 mil as a buyout for 30 hardworking years.

@zes, are you actually trying to claim that the Union would actively fight against a large financial windfall for their loyal members if approached by the company with such an offer?

That’s plain ludicrous.

Just try to imagine the press that would be generated by such a silly stance in both AFL-CIO and conservative circles. It would be the death knell of any Locals that advocated for such a back-stabbing stance to the workingclass.

Think before you post!

All of the wild speculations below, even the most generous of them, still would fail to make up for the annihilation that has been done to the 401k since last September, combined with the interest rate hit, (to say nothing of the brutal beating we took on losing the life expectancy actuarial battle).

Even the brightest prospect of a buyout given below doesn’t come any way near to breaking even over what many would have had just retiring last summer without any EISP, IMHO.

I’m sticking it out.

I think 2200 per year plus the 50,000 and five years would entice a lot of my coworkers to go. If they offered 3300 per year, they wouldn’t have to offer the time...but added time would definitely get more to go who don’t quite have the years to reach the magic number of 75.

Likely all a rumor. I don't think though that $8000 will get too many employees that are 60 to 62 to leave. More money to be made by staying on until they reach their SS retirement of 66 to 67 and a half years.

If they really want the older generation to leave then four years of pay, paid out over four years plus the lump sum and folks would be leaving in droves.

I was referring to the larger ones...2014,2015 & 2016. Every offer since then have been small and targeted. 2014-2016 there were people in my garage that could’ve went, but decided to stay until the next one....not knowing it was going to be a few years down the line.

Don’t know how they didn’t get there number, they only offered it to a handful of people in a handful of jobs. People are leaving on their own. Not me, I will stay until hell freezes over being I leave without a good offer.

Heard the last few times they offered an eisp, they didn’t get the numbers they wanted, so they are going to offer a good one to entice the older folks to go.
