Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I don't really understand Union mentality

On the standuptoverizon facebook page they brag about how much money the strike is costing VZ. They brag about how municipalities are switching from VZ to another carrier. They are proud they are picketing vzw stores and convincing customers to switch to VZ's competitors. This is still their company. A strike is only temporary. One of the sticking points is protecting jobs. Losing customers and profits is definitely some backwards thinking about how to save jobs with the company. In the end a contract will be signed, there will be fewer customers, there will be hostility and resentment, and there will be jobs lost whether it be union side or management side. And just FYI the word management at VZ does not mean the same as manager. Management at VZ can mean anything from accounting to IT to being a patent attorney.

So keep driving customers away, keep getting YOUR customers to switch to another carrier, and keep being proud of how much money the strike is costing VZ. I'm sure that will have no impact on the jobs you're trying to protect.

Trying to string a correlation from the well paid union thugs to slavery is a bit much even for on here. Like you guys keep saying: you have a choice blah blah blah. Slaves didn't.

I'm certain that many slave owners had the same mentality...

And Vz already stated they will be break even if the strike is resolved by week 6. They save the slugs pay and bennies but have to put out in training and overtime. But still - biting the hand that feeds one's ample a$$ is never a good thing.

@yiz. No, my utter disdain isn't aimed at working class men and women. It's aimed squarely at the non-working union trash. Only a union member would be stupid to walk away from a good job and be proud that his family is going broke and his kids have no health insurance. You think that's something to be proud of?? What is wrong with you people? If you think other working class families have sympathy for your chase, you're dead wrong. All people see are fat, bloated, greedy, arrogant, lazy a$$holes who would rather walk in circles all day than actually do a little honest labor. The death of the union can't come fast enough.

Right. And that's why the countries with the highest standard of living - over there in "socialist" Europe - are also heavily unionized...hmmm...

Sorry dude - but I am happy with my life. Shame you aren't on any aspect of yours. Did you finish off your honey do list and have nothing better to do than come on here?

Your utter disdain for working class, family people is despicable. Your stereotyping and name calling just points to the fact that you have not evolved past us so called Neanderthals.. Your anger and contemp will put you in an early grave and from the sounds of it you deserve it. God forbid that people have a voice in this sh--ty version of capitalism. You just come across as every bit of an a--hole of a person you describe union members as being. You my fine sir are loser!

I really don't understand how any union worker can be proud of their actions. They walk around looking like mangy animals that any customer would refuse to let in their homes. They act like some sort of uncivilized clan of Neanderthals. Their greed, arrogance, and laziness are the only reasons the strike is happening in the first place. They don't care about the middle class, that's just a bunch of BS to hide the fact that all they really care about is getting as many company handouts as possible to support their bloated egos and waistlines. If they weren't so greedy and lazy, they could be on the job today. I say good riddance to all of them. Take a flea bath and get your rabies shots you disgusting animals.

WTF - you are NOT oppressed. YOU are not entitled. You are HIGHLY paid workers with excellent bennies. And the call centers? Their worth is shown when they are easily replaced with grateful Filipinos. How idiotic. You'll be on your knees in your next job making minimum wage which the majority of you deserve. SMFH

OP: That's why they want job security so much in their contract so the RIFs they cause by their actions won't hit them.

Unions in today's world are poison to businesses. They are vehicles for entitlement and promote laziness by not giving any incentives for an employee to do his/her best.

The Verizon union is a prime example of why we won't see unions anywhere in 10 years.

Your critical thinking process is lacking. Ever heard of cause and effect? Without the unions "employees" there will soon be no "employees" left in America. We will all be working in McDonald's or Walmart collecting food stamps and section 8 because all the middle class wages will be shipped oversees to a third world country where the corporations can pay slave wages. And don't give me the bs slogan of improving your skill set because ANY technical, customer care, accounting or any management can be done oversees in this so called global economy. This country almost has no legs left to it and it IS the goal of the people with the money to make us all subservient to them. I hope you get what's coming to you!

@tbs has proven my point. it's not about the middle class at all. It's about protecting union members at VZ and that's it. Union employees are NOT necessary....only employees are necessary. And you're too stupid to see your "strike is working" by having your customers leave "in droves" idiotic.

How about you educate yourself about the municipalities. They have stated that they have chosen to support the union in support of keeping middle class jobs here and won't enter into any new contracts with Verizon. They are also reviewing all current contracts.

The purpose of a strike is to show the company that union employees are necessary. So when we see the stock go down and people switching carriers in DROVES, we see that our strike is working.

We'll be back. Oh, yes, there will be layoffs as a result of this strike. But those will be in the management side of the house. All you EWAs playing dressup with your shiny hardhats? Who's been minding the store while you've been out trying not to drop a 28 foot ladder on somebody's car? Think about it: RIF

The union has job security, so we'll be in it for as long as we want. I know I'll be waiting for a good early retirement offer and plenty of my friends are saying the same. That's how disgusted we are with this company.

You are correct in your statement that its not 89 but that's about all you got right. What you don't seem to realize is that Verizon has the obligation to the customer, not the union. WE are not hurting the customer, Verizon's foolish assumption that it could try to bulldoze us with givebacks and that it could still serve the very customers that pay them if we strike was foolish. It's your backwards thinking that is hurting this country. Unions are needed NOW more than ever. There is a direct correlation between the decline of unions in the workforce and the rise of the 1%. This country's middle class has been decimated because people no longer have the right to stand up for themselves because of the lack of union. What has transpired over the last 30-40 years has slowly but surely turned this country into a mess with many people trapped in a perpetual cycle of poverty and despair. So yes unions are still needed to try and fight for what is left of the worker class. If corporations have their way eventually every job will be shipped overseas to third world countries for weekly wages that are less than two hours of work here. Thank you for supporting the race to the bottom you idiot. Your job is next!!!

The company leaves the copper plant to rot in areas that don't have fios, and that drives customers away in droves. What about that? Oh but that's a business decision so it must be ok.

not to mention that the EWA's they are threatening and harassing are the ones who are above them in the hierarchy of the company. some of them even have an impact on their jobs. irritating those above you doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me either.

The union mentality is antiquated, they are trying to undermine the company by pushing away customers and switching their own services to competitors to hurt the company. Less customer less work less need for the techs walking in a circle. It's not like 89 where people had no real alternative to go for phone services, now you can turn to any company you want for all your services. The union is hurting the people they are claiming to protect, and how about picking a cause and run with it. Corporate greed, families, better pay, job security, keep jobs in America, blah blah blah I am sick of hearing it. The unions will change nothing as long as they keep allying themselves with the very politicians that are at the heart of what is wrong.

I don't know what's so hard Not to understand. The whole point of a strike is to hurt the company financially and to put pressure on the company through political clout. The work is there. We have full workloads everyday just like the scabs and ewa people do. Verizon only knows the bottom line and if that can be affected then maybe they will start to listen. Will it work? That remains to be seen but what's the point in not fighting? If we don't fight a lot of people will be out of a job because Verizon is only looking to enhance their bottom line through shipping jobs out of the country. We would rather die standing up than live on our knees. We have a given right to stand up to this company and that's what we are doing. Do you understand now?

You're absolutely right, but the only play that the union feels they have is to hit Verizon where it hurts. Ultimately the only thing that Verizon's shareholders look at is profit and loss. At this point they are starting to lose and the union believes that will impact the decision on the contract. Yew, we are doing ourselves a disservice but it is short lived and tomorrow will be forgotten. We all went out and switched carriers to ATT because they were "union strong. " now look what's happening in San Diego. Should we change carriers again, of course not. Only time will tell how this plays out.

Clearly stated, glad someone is pointing out the obvious that continues to be ignored. This is one reason why there will not be a job security clause, not enough work, why keep the extra people. The union should understand driving business away will result in more job loss.
