Trying to understand the union mindset

I have a few questions for union members on strike. I won't be surprised to be called names or receive less than thought out responses from this site but I figured I'd ask.

For background, I am a non-union VZ employee working an EWA. I want to understand the mindset of the union workers.

  1. The CWA has been calling VZ "greedy" because they earned a profit of $4.22 billion in 2015. Why is a company greedy for earning a profit? Do you realize that they have a legal obligation to attempt to maximize that profit for the shareholders? Shareholders that include retirees and pension funds? Do you get it that if they operate at a loss, you have no job? Any company is under no obligation to share that profit with the employees, none.

  2. Lowell McAdam earned $18 million as CEO. Rather than piss and moan about it have you ever stopped to wonder what he did to become CEO and why you arent't??

  3. You complain about the VZ raw profit amount. Do you know what VZ's "profit margin" was? Do you even know what a profit margin is and why it's important? Do you know how it compares to other companies?

  4. so if VZ is greedy for earning $4.22 billion, how much profit should they earn and how do you arrive at that amount?

This whole mess is part of the economic ignorance that pervades most of the world these days. It's all fair this and fair that without any quantitative definition of what FAIR is. Wake up, life isn't fair. Ditch the union put on your big person pants and take care of yourself.

Liberal Arts lol. Not even close buddy. Double major undergrad, and two Masters degrees. I am sure your public school brain can't fathom that, and it's ok. I know you blue collar guys aren't bad people. You're just ignorant and lazy, but I'm sure you're not a bad guy. I wouldn't want to associate with you or anything, but I'm sure your double wide is somewhat clean and your life isn't bad.

In my eyes, college = Trade school. In other words, additional education that teaches you how to do something besides follow. The union best serves those who like others to make decisions for them. They trade their freedoms for job security...which isn't real secure anymore.

I can't handle the ignorance I just read on this post. Union guys, for Pete's sake, please learn how to use proper grammar. I have to have my Slob To English translator handy just to try and understand what you pitiful slobs are even trying to say. It's sad really when you see a group of people like yourselves that has been left behind by society. I'm sure there in your double wide trailers, you're the king of the castle. But in polite society, one should be able to carry on a conversation beyond the third grade level. Maybe it's ignorance, or maybe it's just the failed public schools. Whatever the cause, I implore you to try and better yourselves and at least get your GED.

"the sheep ( non union) can think what they want. and the union (sheep dogs) i'll bet wish the need for a union was not needed"

No irony here. 20 union workers to a manager. That one f'ed up sheep farm. 20 dogs herding one sheep. I think what you intended was we (non-Union) are sheep and you (Union) are sheep. We are herded by our respected companies us (VZ CEO) and you (Union president). Neither VZ or the Union are fighting for the middle class. Both are only concerned about proving value and expanding their reach.

But I guess it's cooler to think as ones self as a sheepdog.

this is exactly what the upper management wants. is for middle class aholes to say bad things to oneanother instead of seeing both sides and help oneanother.look all of our time is almost up. the sheep ( non union) can think what they want. and the union (sheep dogs) i'll bet wish the need for a union was not needed. we (you) work in a time were people for some reason want or have to take advantage of someone. the best to you both. GOD BLESS THE MIDDLE CLASS

"The union followers, on the other hand, just can't get themselves to stand up to the peer pressure and so there they remain suckling like little piggies. "

Nah, that's the vapid corporate-type VZ-team clone suckling up to their managers, kissing arse and getting ahead with politics instead of merit.

Yep. That sure describes VZ.

And why should a plumber go to college? Why does everyone have to go to college? What's with your snobbish elitism? Why do you like classifying people to make yourself feel good? College standards have been lowered and dumbed-down and you seem like Exhibit A.

Just because you are unhappy and festering in your boring, unrewarding job doesn't mean that everyone should go to college. Besides, any moron can fill out a spreadsheet. Apparently you wasted your time in college lol

To understand the union mindset, you have to go back to grade school when there were those who only did what the "cool" kids told them to do. You know, those kids who were popular then and are worthless now. The rest of us went to college and gained what we needed to be able to make our way in life rather than depending on the fickle union teat.

The union followers, on the other hand, just can't get themselves to stand up to the peer pressure and so there they remain suckling like little piggies. Unfortunately for them, the milk is quickly running dry and many have lost their ability to think for themselves.

"Nobody says company should not turn profit. But everyone expects to be paid what they were promised. "

My mistake I thought this was your post on promises but it appears you were merely replying to my post about that position. Best wishes on getting what you and the union deem as a fair deal. I know it's a challenging time and I hope for the best out come for you and yours.

"The core of the issue was that you accused The company of breaking promises which they have not. "

I can't find any of my posts stating something along these lines, but if that's what you read into it that's fine by me, so in closing let me state the following...

FTR, I'm not - nor have I ever been - interested in "promises" from the company's side, or lack thereof. What I am interested in is a contract so I can decide where I'm taking my life from that point on.

Homophobia? Seeing how you're quick to critique one's spelling & grammar, wow, you must be totally uncomfortable in your own skin, to throw around the "homophobia" card for something so innocuous and benign. You really need to get out of your insular world. wow.

"Having said that, we are still permanent employees that haven't been paid off like a car which is the part of my post that you decided not to address for whatever reason."

This example used to illustrate how promises work in the construct of a contract. Since you demonstrated your understanding of promises in a contract it did not appear relevant to revisit. I also agree you are a permanent employee of the Union so no reason to debate or discuss. The core of the issue was that you accused The company of breaking promises which they have not. They are simply working to negotiate a new contract and the union does not like the new position so you chose to strike.

Why so sexist. Why did you not choose boot lickin, asskissin 8-year old little boy.

Typical Union scum who thinks all girls are weak and nothing more than a piece of meat. The good news is it will be easier for women to pick you out now as you will be the guy in the bar asking your friends to pay your way.

I respect and understand this. I appreciate that you are informed and know exactly what you are fighting for. I will say that with increases in automation and product stability (fiber v. Copper) keeping the same number of jobs in the field is a challenge. However, I wish you the best in this endeavor and hope for the best outcome for you and your family.

"Nope. While every CBA has an expiration date indeed, we were hired as permanent employees, under union representation. Failure of these two parties to negotiate a new contract can result in several things, with strike being one of them. No one here is asking for more than what they were promised."

That you for admitting that the companies are entitled to negotiate new terms under a new contract. This implies you understand that contract to contract "promises" vary as each contract is unique and set for a statice amount of time.

This means all promises under the current contract have been satisfied and therefore no promises broken. Now the company wants to make new promises in the new contract and the union does not like it so the union chose to strike. Therefore, you are not on strike due to broken promises but instead because you do not like the terms of the new contract.

I'm all for making the company profitable. The problem is there is so much work out there and it's getting neglected. Some of this plant is in danger of hurting someone. This company could stand to hire a few thousand employees for the areas they want us to travel to and be away from our family for months at a time. How do these ewa people like being away from your family. You are making huge money and we will likely be doing it for straight time. Big difference

"They aren't allowed to think on their own."

-For all intents & purposes, that kind of describes the EWA/scab/team as well.

"They only regugitate the talking points that have been programmed into their brains by the union leaders. "

-Conversely, you can replace "union leaders with "VZ teamers", to describe you and your fellow brethren's mindset.

"This is why the union represents blue collar employees."

-We get it. You're a pretentious snob who thinks too highly of themselves.

If you were as smart and important as you say you are, you'd be on the golf course or country club right now with Lowell & Mudge. But you're here trying to convince us otherwise.

Carry on....

@OP You do realize that trying to reason with a union member is an exercise in futility? They aren't allowed to think on their own. They only regugitate the talking points that have been programmed into their brains by the union leaders. This is why the union represents blue collar employees. The union preys on the uneducated, ignorant, and lazy and that's how the union stays afloat. the union says hey just pay me X% of your earnings and I'll take care of you. the union becomes their pimp, and the members are nothing more than dirty h--kers being used to fill the pimps wallet.

You're soooooo smart! Hey, there's the qualifications for one to become a CEO, which you rhetorically asked in your silly diatribe.

We get it: you're an overqualified EWA with an unsatisfying job at VZ, which came to a head when you could publicly show your insecurity by pointing out the usage of "your" vs "you're", yet couldn't figure out how to take a ladder off of a truck.

Pure gold. "Your" vs "You're" lol. What a tool. Thanks for the laugh, I swear I can't make this stuff up lol lol

"At month 61 if the finance company asks you to pay 200 dollars forever do you blindly pay them?"

At month 61 that car has been paid off, but the 39K striking workers are still legally employed by VZ, even if on strike and with no contract in place. They haven't been paid off, not by a long stretch.

"Not everyone gets a pension or contributes to 401k, You made up the numbers. Not accurate. Made up average. No facts here."

You are correct I did make an assumption. However, this was based on union information. No new hires in 8 years. This implies the most junior among you should have had the opportunity to contribute 6% of their pay and get 6% company match for 8 years. Using Union low end of pay 60k and absolutely no gains you get 57600. Now on the high end you have members that have a pension and a 401k that have in excess of 33 years in the company the value here varies greatly but in all cases will be in excess of 200k.

So the assumption made should be very accurate unless the union lies and makes more money thank stated in which case the number would be almost double soooo 8 billion.

Now if you are saying all you junior members do not contribute to the 401k then the wtf are they on strike for as they have no idea what benefits are or how they work.

Sincerely,

Fact checker

"Nobody says company should not turn profit. But everyone expects to be paid what they were promised. Try telling your credit card company to make consessions and lower your APR. "

I think you are confused. When you were hired it was under the terms of a contract that had an end date. You were provided exactly what was promised during the terms of each contract revision. The fallacy you have made is you assumed that a finite contract was not finite. So now you feel entitled to more than you are promised. Using a finance example: You buy a car with a 200 dollar payment for 60 month. At month 61 if the finance company asks you to pay 200 dollars forever do you blindly pay them?
