Thread regarding Edward Jones layoffs

Is the EJ partnership a Cult? You decide…

Seeing all the curated nonsense coming from the partner meeting on Amplify, I asked Gemini to share characteristics of a cult. Here’s what it gave me.

“Cults are typically defined by a charismatic, unaccountable leader, high-control, and exploitative behavior, often utilizing thought reform and isolation to create total dependency. Key markers include unquestioning commitment to the leader, intolerance of criticism, and a, "us-versus-them" mentality. Examples include isolation from family/friends and mandatory, constant financial or time commitments.

Key Characteristics of a Cult

  • Charismatic, Authoritarian Leader: The group revolves around a leader who is viewed as the ultimate authority, often a messianic figure, who is not accountable to any authorities.
  • Isolation and Control: Members are isolated from the outside world, including friends and family, to foster dependency.
  • Coercive Persuasion/Thought Reform:Techniques like chanting, meditation, or intense work routines are used to suppress doubt and force compliance.
  • Exploitation: Leaders often financially, emotionally, or se-----y exploit members.
  • "Us vs. Them" Mentality: The group creates conflict with wider society, viewing themselves as superior or enlightened.
  • No Tolerance for Questions: Dissent, criticism, or doubt is discouraged or severely punished.
  • Preoccupation with Money/Recruitment: The group constantly seeks new members and funds, demanding significant personal resources.
  • Fear of Leaving: Members often fear reprisals or believe there is no life outside the group.”

There is ZERO reason to have loyalty to this company, or any other. Even as an LP. Do your job, collect your paychecks/LP, and TAKE YOUR PTO completely offline. A cult only exists through its sycophants. Buying into the partnership doesn't make you one of them. It is a smart financial move if you plan on sticking around for a bit. It doesn't have to be anything more than that.

Is the culture worse than it was under previous MPs? Certainly feels that way. We can also recognize that this firm has a rich history, with the partnership being a cornerstone of that. Partnership or not, there is a significant shift that occurs when people feel valued vs. replaceable. The latter is your "you are here moment" and it will be Penny's legacy.

Imagine how empty your life must feel to chase meaning from a corporation that would cut you loose without blinking if the pantsuit said so.

Of course it is very cult-like. From the huge portrait of Ted in the atrium of the South Campus in St. Louis to the Edward Jones Hall of Fame up the stairs from the auditorium. I have been other places as a professional. They are all pretty much standard companies. However, Edward Jones outshines them all when it comes to internal marketing of the "culture". Let's just say I will not be giving any "toasts to Ted" anytime soon. I do not toast Penny either. I curse her everyday. If Janet Reno was still alive she would burn the place to the ground.

Corporate culture has started to feel less like work and more like worship.

Doing your job well used to be enough. Now it feels like you’re expected to buy into a “higher purpose,” attend the pep rallies, repeat the values, and treat the company like it’s a movement instead of a paycheck.

Somewhere along the way, workplaces stopped being places where adults collaborate to get things done. They became substitutes for community. But your coworkers are not your family, and your employer is not your identity. The only thing most of us share at work is a payroll system.

Real community comes from shared values, shared history, and chosen relationships. When companies try to manufacture that connection, it can start to feel hollow, even cult-like.

Work can matter. But it shouldn’t have to replace the rest of your life.

Short answer: yes. This isn’t a new observation, though. Edward Jones has had a cult-like feel even before PP; it’s disguised as “culture “ when they really just want your absolute & complete buy-in of their bullsh-t so they don’t have to pay you what you’re really worth & continue to get you to do all these “yay “-jobs for free.

Um yes! We've always joked that it was like cult 3-4 yrs ago. Now, we aren't joking, and nobody is laughing. Business schools in the future will use as a prime example of how destroy a company in record time. Wait until people see the new AI generated "behaviors" that are coming out. We are cult being run by psychopaths and non stop Chatgp talking points. When was the last time anyone in townhall spoke to us like a normal human?
