Voluntary Severance Package?

I commonly hear about people getting a voluntary severance package as opposed to laying people off. What incentives does that package include to get people to leave? Also what criteria do they use for offering one to employees. I’ve been here for nearly two decades and never received one.

The voluntary resignation that was done in UHC's benefit operations area (shared services like claims, benefits, member services, provider operations, etc.) is still proving to be a disaster and was highly criticized all the way to my last day. Any person with a half a brain would have known all the good people were going to take it and indeed they did. Most of the last days were in August/September and I heard that the left overs are really having a rough time. All the good sups/managers/directors left too and they had more takers than they needed to meet whatever quota Mike Baker had. Backlogs, bad service, and system issues are going to be the norm in the near future. That leadership team does not have the skills/capabilities necessary to prevent a further downslide or fix the problems. As of my last day, Mike Baker was still the COO so not sure where the "he got moved" statement came from unless it happened in the last couple of weeks. It was spoken of often that he and his direct reports were not looked upon favorably for that program or its rollout and the operational issues will continue to compound. As of my last day, all replacement requisitions to replace the "overage" or fill roles of people they had to move to fill other vacancies were cancelled and they were told they can't hire this year. Best decision I ever made and no one will ever get that much in a layoff again and I highly doubt they will ever even do that again because of this epic failure.

Why are they not backfilling positions for Optum. What’s up? Sketchy.

@ca thanks that makes sense. I’ve have people on my team offered Voluntary Severance, but never me. My guess is they were all older than 55 and I’m not.

Be careful taking voluntary severance you may not receive unemployment due to voluntary resignation.

@ca And yet they don't care about the immense brain drain caused by the constant migrations from this service to that service, the ever-changing policies enforced by ESRO, the burnout from working with less and less resources, the burnout of our offshored coworkers being useless, the constant inundation of Help Desk tickets after Help Desk got offshored, the constant overall toxicity of this org.

Why does a good engineer stay as it is, outside of the depression and burnout that many of us have? Any person reasonably more sane than me has left or is leaving for the many greener pastures out there.

Mike Baker offered his org a package earlier this year. You had to get approved by upper management though. I don’t think it worked because I actually saw he transferred to a new org lol

They don’t offer them because everyone with a brain would take one and they’d have no knowledge left

@OP
Voluntary severance packages AKA golden parachutes, are based on business unit. Some business units actually conduct them every couple of years. Optum Tech did one about 10 years ago. There was a discussion in HR about doing another one last year but the concern was that the people that qualify would be so great that they would have a technical brain drain. The rules for it 10 years ago were, 10 years of service and 55 years old. The package at the time was two weeks for every year and a lump sum for each person who was insured under the employee. I had one employee on my team that qualified but he did not take it because he needed to still work more years.

Those were offered at the start of this year in early spring. It’s looking more and more like the takers were the smart ones.

I am not aware of it happening in ordinary course of business.
