Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Estimate of how many said NO on mobility survey

Rumors floating around that 24% already said NO on survey to Edmonton. Lot of others (including me) are playing for time and decided to wait until final decision time of Jan'26. Anyone has insights how the MC is reacting to much steeper than expected rate? I suspect they dont care ... perhaps they will bring in more expats from Houston to fill Senior Management roles.

@f9 What do you mean? Just got home from the Edmonton mine after a long 24h shift. Tried to sleep but couldn't stop coughing, the black lung cometh

@a8 my friend. There is no mining site in Edmonton. It’s amazing that people that work for Imperial don’t actually know what gets done where. Time to come out of your bubble.

There is a Latin phrase "Iacta alea est" meaning "the die is cast," famously uttered by Julius Caesar as he crossed the Rubicon river, marking an irreversible point of no return. The company has been given a mandate by the majority owners. The company management to earn their lucrative bonuses and incentive compensation will execute with passion.

@eb Exactly. We shouldn’t focus solely on IOL’s future plans in Canada — we also need to consider the short term and long term operational strategies of other O&G companies in the country. It’s important to understand how many people have been laid off across the industry so far (they will be competitors in job market), and how many more are expected to be affected in the near future (if you have landed a new job, those will be your competitors in the future when jumping ship).

@e7 They don’t even need to find qualified people in just Edmonton. Realistically there’s lots of qualified people in Calgary, Fort Mac, etc. who would be happy to work for Imperial in Edmonton. The only real issue for the company will be any disruption as key people leave and while they’re still replacing these people. It can be done for sure but it doesn’t happen overnight either.

@e7 Finding local candidates is good option for lower CL jobs - EM processes of working are very inward looking and not many in industry are familiar with those. Good luck finding a right fit in market.

@ba I don’t think management cares about the number of people giving fake “yes” responses. They need to lay off far more employees than the number they plan to relocate to Edmonton. They also know that IOL offers better pay than most non O&G companies. Even if not enough people agree to move to Edmonton, they can easily find local candidates there to fill those positions.

@e4 You can say yes first, once get offered a new position out there, you still can resign. Even you get offered a position within IOL, you still have right to say no to the offer.

@dt You’re right about buying some time to find a new job in Calgary. However, those who are closely tied to the O&G industry don’t have many alternatives within town. This strategy will benefit people whose skills are transferable to other industries and who don’t necessarily expect the same level of pay.

What’s fake yes? I thought you could only pick yes or no

@a5 There's a lot of people who said yes to say no, but there's also a lot of people who said yes and will accept a job only so that they can stay on until they can find a new job in Calgary. For anyone who hasn't been at the company that long, they don't really give up much in terms of severance and at least saying yes means they stay employed until they can find a new job in Calgary.

I'd be pretty surprised if they get the numbers they need to ACTUALLY move to Edmonton, regardless of how many people say yes on the survey or even accept jobs in January. 2H2028 is a lot of time to find something else in Calgary.

23 % in Calgary said not mobile.
Company believes 50% of the yeses are false positive.

70% of EMPS selected mobile.

The longer you wait gets secretly reflected as a no

you gotta change your sources. My rumor source says 50% said NO

so what roles are considered "senior management" at the Edmonton mining/refinery operation site? Certainly no senior business type roles.

24% is not bad. They 50% so I am sure the fake “yeses” will get them to where they need to be
