Thread regarding PepsiCo Inc. (Pepsi) layoffs

Leadership? More like “tell me what to do, boss”

Just walked out of a meeting with a group of “leaders” — directors all the way up to VPs. Everyone’s going around the room giving intros, talking about their orgs, their priorities, the usual corporate spiel.

Then it gets to this senior director, and his intro is literally:
“My job is to follow my manager’s vision and implement it.”

I had to stop myself from laughing.
At that level, you’re supposed to set direction, challenge strategy, bring clarity — not proudly announce that you’re basically an order-taker with a fancy title.

It’s wild how many people get promoted into leadership roles and still operate like junior ICs waiting for instructions. No ownership, no autonomy, no original thought… just “tell me what to do boss.”

And the worst part? These are the folks making decisions that impact entire teams.

Makes you wonder what leadership even means anymore.

Scenario = Campus Intern - Campus Hire with no real experience - Has there letter credentials of MBA. Its so insulting and "thrilling" to be in division meetings and hear how barely 20 somethings just got back from a trip to Europe-with smiling selfies crop tops holding up the peace sign with pierced lips and how they love to share that there entire college education was paid for - given a car - with no financial worries -- that they are already thinking about where their next trip will be and that they are looking to purchase a home. All the while 35 plus might have taken a staycation with family this year, watches how those with a fraction of experience and communicative abilities hard pass them in the company -- worried about when their job will be given to the next in-experienced Prince or Princess that joins the team. It's sickening how the company caters to the campus hires. they should include in their off site get togethers the photos of those that were sacrificed in employment and career so that they can be bought for the exchange of a family being able to take care of their children or retire on time. Particularly love it when the interns pat themselves on the back for getting a days pay to attend a cool event, for food, swag, and to pose at a volunteer event the company coordinated to put them on display all the while they are edging out those that brought innovation to the company years of dedication. HR should be so proud of themselves along with the hiring managers who fire. This place is nothing but full of bullies

@kn I don't know why you are saying this :D Offshore is great. 20 holidays a year. Log off by 9 am CST. Take days to do what would be same day from someone here. It's pathetic. I often get the won't join meetings today due to "personal work". Anyone based here in a normal company would be fired.

Well some of us in the company do have a boss that leaves no room for independent thinking of any kind. They are overbearing micro managers who critique the decks you build for them, the way you talk on calls, your teams vision and strategies, the people you hire, the way you handle meetings down to the agenda including lunch menu, who is the face of your team, logos, teams backgrounds, team attire etc. So yes in this case my job is to implement their vision and not to try anything new or outside of that tightly controlled box!!

Campus hires are the downfall of this company. People that invest their time and years to run the business and promote campus hires who have no clue what they are doing. I have been saying this for over 20 years that they need to eliminate the campus program. Train and promote from the people who leave sweat blood and tears on the table. Not a campus hire who will jump ship as soon as someone offers them more money.

I’ll take things that never happened for $100, Alex. I’m sure there are many LGs with that attitude but none who would admit to it in a meeting like that.

Sad to hear this. Retired 26 years with PepsiCo as. Sr. Dir. for L11+ roles leadership was expected. Having an idea, a vision, pointing the way, etc. Simple execution was table stakes and not even really mentioned unless you had extenuating circumstances that made achieving success a real challenge. So, this director’s superiors are obviously incompetent as well.

@b4 Nope. He's probably from India. Just a worker following the "Peter Rule."

Let me guess. The person is a campus hire with a few years of work experience.
