Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

I think it’s time we tell the truth.

I think it’s time we tell the truth.

When I joined the workforce in 2002, many of my engineering leads and managers were working from the US, while I was working from Bangalore.

One thing I noticed very early was the difference in work culture.

Indians are, by nature, extremely work-oriented. We don’t like leaving things unfinished. I remember hearing complaints from Indian colleagues about our US counterparts: “These people are privileged. They shut their computers at exactly 4:30 PM.”

Even during a major P1 production issue, you could sometimes see the US team log off when their working hours were over. Meanwhile, the people still in the office were predominantly Indians—working until 10 or 11 PM, handing things over to the offshore team, and then finally going home to their families.

It was a complaint. But, in a strange way, it was also an appreciation of our own work ethic.

Yes, many people in the US have historically enjoyed a level of work-life balance that many Indians did not. They could shut their laptops at 4:30 PM and walk away. We often felt that we couldn't.

But our mentality was different:

“We are getting paid. We have a responsibility. We need to solve the problem. We don't want the company to get a bad name.”

And then we went home.

Our families mattered enormously to us. But we also believed that our ability to provide for our families came from having a job in the first place. We were grateful for that opportunity, and we took that responsibility seriously.

That mentality helped many of us build careers across companies and industries.

We weren't slaves to anyone. We were people who understood the value of an opportunity—and were willing to work extraordinarily hard to make the most of it.

And here is where I think the H-1B debate gets uncomfortable.

For years, everyone benefited from this system.

You valued your freedom.
You valued your work-life balance.
You valued your paycheck.
And we valued our families too.

But for many of us, loving our families meant something different.

We were willing to live thousands of miles away from them, work long hours, sacrifice weekends, and endure years of uncertainty because the ultimate goal was simple:

Make sure our families are taken care of.

That's the difference.

So before blaming Indians or H-1B workers for being willing to work hard, perhaps we should acknowledge the other side of the story.

People didn't come here because they wanted to take something away from someone else.

Many came because they were willing to make sacrifices that others simply weren't willing to make.

And that work ethic didn't suddenly become a problem when the people doing it happened to be Indian.

@e7 they are cheap and compliant and will say yes to anything. Even an unreasonable ask.

That's the difference.

@a1 Americans and Europeans are hypocrites. They colonized and looted other countries. Now all are going broke because those days are over. Europe is broke and controlled vessel states of America. America is in decline. 40 trillion in debt. The day the middle east throws out the dollar for oil the end of America living off the backs of the rest of the world will end. America's main asset is dollars and that is losing value.

@bd Honest workers - says who? Look at GM or any other American manufacturing company stocked with only Americans. What is the quality of their output compared to cars built outside - say Japan. Americans are no better than other nationalities. Inflated egos and crumbling empire. American empire is crumbling thanks to this American ego.

@b9 But they must be doing something better than you hence they are being hired to do the job right? Do you think businesses love Indians for not doing work? Are you that illogical? Business are only interested in what makes them money, if Indians are not doing the job as you say, why are they being kept and not fired? Americans have extremely inflated egos on their capabilities. You claim your military is number one but can't defeat Vi-----g, Ta----n and now Iran. Only in your mind you are that great.

@d4 I strongly disagree, majority of code coming out of Americans regardless of race is bug filled cowboy style with zero test coverage. Those who follow have to build on terrible foundation of American "geniuses".

Most of the mentioned problems can be solved by Vibe coding and AGI.

I worked with some great H1-B employees, and few not-so-great. Most were pretty average. The same can be said about the Americans I worked with. The H1-Bs worked the same hours as the Americans: it was hard to tell an American born in India from an H1-B.

The team in India, though, was very hit-or-miss. A small number of them were great to work with. At least half of them needed to be carried, often by people in that first group, to their detriment. The India teams valued "butts-in-seats" much more than tangible outcomes. If anyone was working until 10pm, it's because they wanted to be seen that they're working at 10pm.

I would believe your fantasy if I didn't have the personal data and experience that contradicts your story entirely.

I just did the math. Over my entire multiple-decade career working with Indians both H1B and offshore, I've encountered about 20% of them that were AVERAGE OR BETTER at the job. And that means they didn't need significant hand-holding to get the job done, they could fill in a lot of the gaps, their work didn't require extensive rework, revision, or entirely deleted and started over.

That means they matched the average domestic worker at minimum. 20% is not a good number.

Working long hours and achieving 20% of the results does not instill an impression of competence. Most domestic workers are average and they can get the work done and figure things out and go home at 5 PM to be with their families.

Not to mention, the language barrier makes it so much more inefficient to deal with non-citizens. All of the teams I've worked on that were all American citizens with English as a first language blew the non-American composed teams out of the water in terms of efficiency, hitting deadlines, and quality.

I'm just telling you that this is the reality for most of us. Especially in software engineering. We don't need another one of you writing inefficient SQL queries with a half-baked buggy web front-end that calls into it. We can write the efficient query and largely bug free front end ourselves and get it mostly right on the first pass all the while coming up with the requirements ourselves in the first place. You all can't even elicit requirements or fill in the gray areas of nuance. The only thing you can offer is possibly cheaper rates and number of bodies thrown at a problem. That's why it takes 5 of you to equal 90% of a domestic worker.

Relax you ain't goin be laid off. Especially in legacy orgs, you safe if you are from India. Non H1b are struggling to put food in their table, working multiple jobs, whereas H1bs are getting on average 3x RSUs, especially people from India. The whole rhetoric H1b work after 4pm is an ancient relic.

No offense, but many of your compatriots were so incompetent, they "delegated by incompetence". Their results were SO bad, managers and greater experts had to redo them. If "cost savings" ever was an aim, that rendered it absurd. We don't wish you anything bad personally. But basically nobody I ever met was satisfied with your performance.

In my experience Indians, whether H1-B or not, are very good at following a script; procedures someone else wrote for them. Rigidly, context need not apply. They generally have an inability to think "outside the box" or deviate from their canned script in any way. When pressed to think independently, they fall apart.

As the old saying goes: "you get what you pay for".

So odd you insist 430 PM. I had hours ending at 5, 5:30 and 6 PM. I would have certainly taken 430 PM if offered, but in over 25 years I was never given that option.

They work longer because they take more time to complete the same work. For a role like support I went an H1B who will be there to answer the phone 24/7. For an escalation support role I want someone smart.

@OP thanks but no thanks. Any one who made it worked very hard. Who left at 5pm. Not me I worked at 2am if needed and did equal sacrifices. H1b is taking jobs away and that is a fact and current administration is doing its fkin job which is to protect Americans not Indians. Companies should also protect American jobs but they wont because they want slaves of the visa system.

I think its the same for everyone. The europeans left their continent in search of Gold and Spices to find a route to India. Some reached, they traded, made money. Some reached different continents like Africa, America etc. They also did the same. But as centuries passed, they forgot their history , what their ancestors did to support their families , sailing in boats to unknown decisions in search of wealth. Now some of them settled in US , forgetting they were also immigrants to the continent now they keep lying that its their country and they are privilgied to be born in that country.

No matter who you are, your ancestors were searching and travelling and settled some where on this beautiful planet. Just because you immigrated earlier makes US your country more than some chinese or indian immigrant who came later.

Everyone in US is a immigrant apart from the Red Indians, who were unfortunately pushed to live reservations in their own land.
