Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Am I the only one who likes working here?

I keep seeing posts on this site saying things like “I’d work at Walmart before I ever work at UHC again” and “this company treats its employees horribly”. I guess it really depends on your specific job and manager, but I’ve never felt that way.

I work remotely (at least for now), get almost 6 weeks of pto, have a relatively easy job that pays me probably $30k above my market rate if I were to look elsewhere, and I’m not micromanaged at all. I could easily leave during the day and nobody would care, my manager only reaches out when they need me, not to make sure I’m online.

I’m not accusing anyone on here of lying about their bad experiences, I completely believe that there are bad managers and departments that treat their employees horribly. But mine doesn’t, and just like any job I think it’s tough to make generalizations about a large company. Unless you’re really well connected to everywhere at the company, I feel like most people’s experiences only apply to their specific team.

I believe that most of us love our jobs we don’t love the culture that is being created. My direct managers are great and I would say leadership too our counterparts make it difficult. I don’t mind working what I can’t stand is the ignorance and entitlement of this new PAM PEX whatever they are called make it difficult to do our job. The attitude of I don’t do that that is not mine I can’t help is ridiculous. Making all teams around them frustrated and having to pick up the slack to keep providers happy and save the relationship.

@OP thank you for being the first to say this. My management is great and I have a wonderful work/life balance. I am grateful to be here. Great benefits and more PTO than use. I feel like my ideas matter and I am left alone to manage my workload and time.

If your higher level, back office, support, and remote your job is likely pretty nice. If your a low level worker in clinical or customer level yeah its probably he-l.

@ab because of you the telecommuting will end and either you will end up in the office in person or they will install all the bells and whistles to track you

I do. And maybe it's because I have a role where I'm not tracked like some others. That's a fair argument. But I have genuinely enjoyed the work I do here, the people I work with. The managers I've had. And because of the recent changes, I'm looking. The feelers are out. I think this is what they want though, for people to leave. And sadly, they're going to lose some good ones.

OP, the reason you feel so happy with your job is you aren’t tracked by the various applications most of UHC is by. Your little happiness rating would go from 100 to 50 in the matter of a month. I could put all my money on it. We are talking about watching clicks, if you are away for over 60 seconds manager gets it on a report. I’m not even making this up. I’ve lived it. It was even part of my metrics which affected my pay rise. You don’t get that most people on lower levels at UHC (which is a lot a lot of the workers), are tracked this way. Be lucky and happy now but you don’t know what it’s like so why say anything you haven’t experienced?

@aa my most recent manager would teams watch and even had the notification when I came online. Thing is they couldn’t say anything because I’m not hourly so there is no way for them to track ever minute I’m online. They were a terrible uneducated manager and I’m so glad to be rid of it.

@a4 I’m on a team that doesn’t but I was before. It’s very dependent on your role but I learned after becoming salaried from hourly I wouldn’t be tracked so that’s the good news.

If you punch out to leave during the day and then punch in when you return what is the harm in that?

It's all good until they install WAT and DAM on your device. If you don't have it now, you will soon.

@a2 people get around that by having a company phone and loading outlook and msteams on it. Makes it appear you are at your desk working even when you are out taking a walk or running errands.

@a2 I never leave midday unless it’s for a doctors appointment or something. But when I do have an appointment, I often don’t even say anything to my manager, I just go.

The only risk is that my manager calls me about something while I’m away, but I could explain that saying I was out to lunch. And if my manager were to call me, it would be about a specific question, not to say “hey why have you been offline for an hour?” My manager has more important things to do than monitor whose Teams circle is green, that sounds like a babysitter, not a manager

Seems like you’re the only one. No seriously I’m pretty sure everyone feels differently but to see more negative than positive, speaks volume. Each team , supervisor etc is different. I’ve been here for almost 3 years. I don’t have the luxury to “leave easily & my manager would not care”. Must be nice.

What department does not track you via clicks or teams.

Buckle up your midday excursions may be eliminated soon. UHC monitors the percentage of time you’re not at your computer actively working.
