Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Got me thinkin'

Just saw one of the fastest thread takedowns I think I've ever seen. It may have been there a minute or two before I saw it but I was in the middle of responding to it when it disappeared. 😂

I guess it was one of the trolls at T bragging about their new AI something or another that was in the news today.

But it got me to thinking.

What are we doing with our wireless network right now?

I have no idea what we've done recently to improve it.

All I hear about is dark fiber, data centers and free AI training for the nation.

And with T getting two big announcements in two days for their 5G improvements, is Dan's plan to actually let the wireless side kind of fizzle out?

Wireless does seem to be the focus of a lot of the layoffs lately unless I am mistaken.

@af "The VZ wireless network is going to sh!t."

Preach! 🙌

Been with wireless about 8 years and it boggles the mind. Like the other person said, every solution that was checked and proven to work was rejected for ones that were checked and proven would fail. It was literally failure by choice.

And if management is to be believed, failure was expected and approved to the top of (G)N&T.

I mean, what do you even do with that? Make it make sense.

VZ cut 40% of the fulltime, very experienced RF design engineers in the NC/SC/TN (CARTN) market area in the big RIF at the end of 2025. That tells you everything you need to know. Those markets have (had) incredible traffic growth challenges that need to be kept up with (or download speeds go to cr-p real quick and mod/new build projects take a long time to come to fruition). But, Dan wants to increase the stock price (i.e. his income), so the network is going to "coast" for a while (those employees left behind are expected to pick up the slack). Projects, at least on paper (in the system) can be created to make it look like there is a plan, but if they are not implemented, they are just vaporware/talking points. The VZ wireless network is going to sh!t.

@a7 Good post. I've lost track of all of the failed wireless bridges to nowhere that are still being funded every year. Even though they could have been finished, successful and improving wireless by fixing some of the other failures. Management has repeatedly rejected every proven solution and actually said "This is the path leadership has chosen". And now the people that are more than capable of fixing the issues are leaving or get riffed.

It stinks of self sabotage and makes no sense whatsoever.

@OP You can usually tell the direction a company is going by where it is currently investing it's money.

Failed wireless AI customer service.
Failed wireless app development.
Failed wireless automation (although it isn't promised until Nov).
Failed wireless inventory management system.
Most wireless stores closed or franchised.
Layoffs in wireless that cut the cost of paying the employees at the bottom while protecting leadership so they can transition to other non wireless departments and continue to spread a wealth of knowledge and experience in AI customer service, app development, automation and inventory management.

Billions of dollars invested in partnerships that appear to be all fiber and AI related:

Transitioning legacy offices into data centers.

Getting dark fiber "all lit up again"

Expanding AI training as a free public service to offset the 25% unemployment Dan predicted AI would cause in an interview with the WSJ in April. And the PR doesn't hurt, amiright? (Bernie is still not happy about it)

Corning Supply Agreement: In September 2026, Verizon and Corning announced a multi-year, multi-billion dollar agreement. Corning will supply 80+ million miles of high-density optical fiber to help Verizon expand broadband and build out the connectivity backbone required for the AI economy.

Google Dark Fiber Deal: In July 2026, Verizon signed a deal with Google valued at more than $1 billion. Under this partnership, Google is utilizing Verizon's dark fiber network to connect its AI data centers.

BT Group Joint Venture: In June 2026, Verizon and BT Group agreed to combine their international enterprise operations into a 50:50 joint venture. The combined platform represents approximately $4 billion in annual revenue.

Bain & Tillman Investment: Backing Verizon's infrastructure, Bain Capital and Tillman Global Holdings injected $1.5 billion into Eaton Fiber, a key network operator providing fiber capacity explicitly to accelerate Verizon's broadband rollout.

Frontier Acquisition Completion: Though initially announced earlier, Verizon finalized its massive $20 billion acquisition of Frontier Communications in January 2026, significantly augmenting its nationwide fiber footprint.

And someone in accounting ordered a Keurig for the break room but it might get sent back since, after ten meetings, it still wasn't fully approved because one of fifteen ADs didn't sign off on it.

I am sure wireless will be around for years to come.

Hey 👏 Are any of the board members affiliated with the other partners? I wonder...

@OP I saw it. And then I didn't. But in all seriousness, I haven't a clue. There was the mention of improved speeds I think about a week ago maybe. But the people here that know seemed to think that wasn't entirely accurate.
