I’m finally admitting it. I should have moved.

So, Plano has more open spaces now?
I would only move IF I wanted to live in that location regardless.
Yeah you regret not moving and then being surplussed after selling your home, moving the kids school, separating the wife from her job and any friends or family you might have had…. Sure buddy. Nobody smart moves for this company on their own dime.

I chose not relocate a year ago and was surplused last fall. I haven’t been able to get a job since. I have had to tap into savings and retirement funds.
I prompted an AI for a risk analysis of relocating to Dallas. This point hit home for me:
- Skin in the game check.
The company is asking you to bear 100% of relocation risk while it bears 0% of the “you might still be laid off in Dallas” risk. That’s a transfer of fragility from firm to employee — the oldest trick in corporate restructuring. Don’t accept asymmetric risk from a counterparty that won’t reciprocate.
@av
100%
T is “cutting cost” it doesn’t matter where you are. They have a certain dollar amount target they need to hit each time (layoff cycle) and they WILL hit that layoff dollar amount target/ headcount amount no matter what. Executives will make sure it happens because their bonuses depend on it!
No matter where your live or how EXCELLENT of an employee you are.
@OP I did and 18 months later I was surplus on Weds. Unless they pay your move don’t.
Everyone feels this way initially. Leaving a good paying job is painful regardless of the cause. Just remember why you left. No relo, no parking, no desk, no loyalty, no stability, toxic culture. Soon you will realize this was the smartest decision you ever made. Get your money working for you, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
I feel the same way OP! #regret
@ae "Go get a job with a company that has a future - Starlink."
We might all be working for Starlink in the near future anyway.
Employees in Dallas, Atlanta, NJ, Washington, California and other locations were all given severance notices this past week. It does not matter where you are or how good you are.
Dallas won’t save your job at this point. Not worth it.
Go get a job with a company that has a future - Starlink.
A close and very important and respected partner I worked with moved and just got the ax. The is despite them being highly regarded by everyone they worked with.
Never move for this place unless you have absolutely no other option.
20 years ago relocation was a golden ticket! Relocation allowance grossed up. Points paid on the sale and purchase of a home. Housing goods moved along with automobiles. Depending on the size of your family you would get $20k and moving and house sale was paid in addition to that!!
If you couldn’t sell your house the company would buy it on the average appraisal value. If you sold it yourself you’d get a 3% bonus!!
I ask why because my team which is still spread around the country, in various offices, surplussed 1 person. And they sat in DAL.
So to imply that’s some kind of “protection” is foolish.
Why?
@a1
Yep - this latest round appears to be completely random. Hub/non-hub played no part.
Reeks of desperation.
Don’t bother regretting. My team mate moved to hub last year and got surplused in the latest round a few days ago, along with 3 others in hub locations. Completely random. Strong technical, got along well with everyone, decent person.
