Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Bye Bye My Choice PTO!

So, now people have six weeks. No carryover to next year.

Lots of people lost a lot of accrued PTO, which would have been paid out.

Btw, starts 10/1, and if you’ve already used six weeks, but have more time off scheduled, your manager has dispersion to take it away.

@OP If there is no carry over what happens to if you get sick in January, have a wedding or other event - sounds like you don't get any time off until to acrue which takes weeks. Correct?

@fj

Exactly. When I was told I would be getting “unlimited PTO” it was September ish last year. I’m in California and had about 200 hours in my bank.

I was to start on unlimited pto in January.

So now I have the 3 month during open enrollment to take what would (by the end of the year) be 6 weeks of vacation. Which, of course I couldn’t do.

By the end of the year, when my unlimited pto was to begin, I still had about 4 weeks in the bank.

Doesn’t matter. Because in January first it’s irrelevant.

If I HAD taken that time earlier in the year I’d be no worse off. It punished people with a lot of time on their hands books.

They are probably getting ready to layoff middle management. We have about 8 leads and 5 managers in my dept. usually 3 of the 5 are offline and 2 of the leads only respond in our chat and the rest are supposedly busy but their teams status is always either away or busy.

Yes some do abuse it - but clearly this was designed to wipe the PTO liability off the books for the high paid staff. Those in places like CA and CO could bank more days and Anthem would have to pay out in time of layoff etc. this little scheme for “unlimited “ PTO cleared the books. And research shows that employees take less PTO overall…….

@c5 It is more than just a few abusing the unlimited PTO policy and scr_wing things up for those of us who followed the rules. Why didn't HR just issue 'warnings' to the people already abusing PTO and leave the rest of us alone instead of changing the rules again??? This place is totally mo--nic!!!

What does the warning letter say? That if you go over 30 days, you get written up?

@OP My director is on constant PTO - endlessly - its been going on for a few years. 2 weeks at a time - by my count 8 weeks this year so far. None of us can hardly get any time approved because "we are not meeting metrics" - unmeetable metrics.

This place is SO F up

I was in this manager forum call.

On one hand, I've seen how unlimited PTO is abused (someone on my team is already, in September, prior to the holidays, at something like 30 days - while others have taken like two days all year.)

On the other, if you're going to cap it at six weeks, it's not unlimited now, is it? I guess this is why they called it "mychoice PTO" vs "unlimited."

This appears to be an example of a few ruining it for everyone else - though as someone who isn't on "mychoice," I have to intentionally take days to stay under the cap. Six weeks is still generous, at least in the US.

But with that cap, it's NOT "unlimited," which is the point. I'm honestly surprised it took them this long to limit "unlimited," especially since the entire point has obviously been about avoiding paying it out in states that require it.

Congrats, E15s+, you get a hard line without being paid out. Was always only a matter of time.

Ah this is higher lvl roles. lol this is why my lead and manager were upset. They would take off several days per month I always wondered. That’s hilarious

What was said about the 20 hours of sick leave that is supposed to be added in 2027 if the hours are below 80 hours at the end of this year? Even with unlimited PTO, you are required to take sick leave in my area. The unlimited PTO change won't impact those already taking days off and not being made to enter the PTO days into Workday. And there are plenty of those people around.....

It was announced at a manager forum this week that My Choice PTO (which WAS essentially unlimited PTO) now is "capped" at 6 weeks per year. A "warning letter " gets sent to an employee when they have used 5 weeks of it. So essentially its not much different than an employee with 5 years experience (at certain grade levels).

Also you dont get the 2 Wellness days that non-My Choice PTO employees get per year and you cant carry over any PTO. So its a scam and therefore not really much of a benefit.

For those not really familiar with it, it is currently available for grades 14 and above but potentially will be for grades 13 next year.

What 6 weeks? Mychoice is the unlimited so you are stating they are now being moved to 6 weeks pto per year? Essentially just back to what it was 2 years ago?

What is my choice pto? Also it is only certain states that require PTO to be paid out. So unless you live in one of those states you would not be paid out on accrued but unused pto.
