I wonder how long before their excitement will turn into the disappointment I feel.

The fact that the company almost exclusively focuses on universities for talent says it all. We don't want new ways of thinking we want people who follow the rules do what we say and are not smart or talented enough to push back.
External new hires are smart enough to come in and look around and leave
It is sad to read the posts on LinkedIn by the interns. Seems HR gave them a go-by and told them all to post.

There were generally good opportunities for folks who started 20-30 years ago. Today, not so much. Things shrinking fast, getting more toxic by the day. Exxon no longer a good place for a career.
