Thread regarding Comcast layoffs

Pre Labor Day Structural Announcements

Incoming. This will be Act II of the Division dissolution. Now the legacy GTO leaders get their just due. A new product led organization is upon us. Welcome Fraser to that post and adios to the most arrogant set of IT leaders I have ever had to tolerate. You of 15-20 years of incompetence built this mess and now you try to claim the NewCo idea as yours. Make no mistake, it was and is not. Remainco begins on September 8th. Watch the fireworks begin next week. Here we go!

@OP Word is the meeting with the Bob's is happening now in GTO as well as incoming to Charlies other org's.

The question is who from that team survives and where the teams go?

Some of the rumors I am hearing are making too much sense. This will be massive and orders of magnitude larger than when Shanz came in.

@284 don't worry, someone will make the same type post in a few weeks, call it the Halloween Halving or something like that, then we go back into the speculation cycle yet again :)

@1s2 if last year is any indication, layoffs are coming in the next two weeks. It’ll be a big one extending far beyond CHQ

@1cw I agree with you. That’s the only logical next step considering now both companies are being run by former CFOs. They’re trying to get rid of much employees as possible…. But it’s never the employees at the top making bank. It’s the ones working hard and just trying to get by. New leaders and org changes everywhere trying to find ways to let people go.

@1bj Good take. Company continues to lose broadband subscribers because fixed wireless and others have introduced competition everywhere. Comcast was slow to react with new customer pricing, and squeezed its existing base to the breaking point with continuous increases. Throw in years of bad customer service, and it's no surprise the party's over. People have other options now. I do think this realization has finally sunk in with leadership, and there are signs of turning it around (5-year $50 price lock, honesty about CX issues.) That said the split clearly looks like an M&A play for both pieces. Who acquires/gets acquired remains to be seen, but deals likely on the horizon.

@19t "embezzlement"?

Calling BS on this.

I liked the open letter that was posted here a couple weeks ago because it actually got at the cultural problems inside the company. And to be clear, I’m not dismissing the toxic leadership issues. Some of us have been dealing with exactly that. But the idea that they’re suddenly coming through and cleaning out all the bad IT/NGTO leadership feels like spectator fantasy to me. Some leaders may go. Some organizations may get consolidated. But plenty of the same people and behaviors will survive the reorg and rebuild underneath whatever new structure gets put in place. I also think the bigger story is being missed.

Comcast has already announced that it is splitting the company. NBCUniversal and Sky are being separated, while the remaining Comcast becomes much more focused around broadband, wireless and business connectivity. That looks a lot more like rationalization and consolidation than some grand plan to turn Comcast into the next great technology growth company. And yes, we still generate a ton of cash. We have the pipes. Wireless is growing. Business Services has value. But broadband customers are still declining, and I have yet to see the transformational product strategy that changes the underlying trajectory. Shield may be a perfectly decent product, but it launched two weeks ago. Calling it evidence of some major product turnaround is premature. More broadly, I haven’t seen anything yet that convinces me the current product strategy creates a meaningful new growth engine for Comcast.

That’s why I think the more realistic end state may be a much smaller, more focused connectivity company that eventually becomes part of further industry consolidation. Maybe Comcast is the consolidator. Maybe, for the first time in its history, Comcast eventually becomes the asset someone else wants. Could a real transformation happen instead? Sure. But that would require much more than swapping out a few IT leaders. You would have to change the operating model, culture, incentives, talent decisions and leadership behavior at a scale I don’t think people appreciate. You can remove a few heads at the top and improve things. You cannot remove twenty years of organizational behavior in one reorg.

@15c “tribal politics” is the best description. Can’t wait for the Surviving Comcast documentary on Netflix. That pie in the face complaint is just the tip of the iceberg of how abusively so many were mistreated.

When are the changes getting announced this week? When do impacted folks know?

The idea that Comcast can become a product led organization — especially under Fraser — is about as believable as it was the last three times they announced it. They struck oil once with X1 and the voice remote, made some savvy financial moves like NBC, and spent the next decade calling themselves a technology company while building nothing. You can’t adopt a product mindset by announcing one. We were a ‘product led organization’ five years ago too. Look what that got us. The Beverly Hillbil--es had a nice house in Beverly Hills but they were still the Hillbil--es.

GTO is long overdue to a major reorg. Blatant discrimination/racism, tribal politics, customers last, ego over performance, self-dealing/ embezzlement over implementation. Finally solutions to the structural cracks of Comcast. The stock price is going to see a major turnaround. Investors confidence will quickly restore as this corrupt group is fractured and dissolved. Our price to sales ratio will restore to prior levels.

@14g Yeah, agree the TPO process is broken and needs to change. I just don’t think AI is the fix people are hoping for. A lot of folks think if we bolt AI onto the process, the hard parts go away. But the hard parts were never the busywork. It’s the context, the dependencies, knowing who owns what, remembering what already failed. I don’t want to offload critical thinking onto a machine. Fix the process first. AI can help once we actually know what we’re fixing.

@a3 while we are at it, let’s get rid of the meaningless remnants of the domain structure like the TPOs who dramatically slow down the process with turf wars and take 3 quarters for “solution design” which AI can do in a few hours.

Any known impacts to the GTO business partners - dxp, ebi, etc?

@ds If you’re not part of the Technology & Product org, this probably makes no sense because there are a lot of internal acronyms. T&P is the larger Technology & Product organization. Under that is GTO, which is the Global Technology Organization. IT is one of the organizations inside GTO. So when this person is talking about IT leadership, they’re talking about a specific group of leaders inside GTO, not all of Technology & Product.

What they’re basically saying is that another big phase of the reorg is coming, and this time some of those longtime IT leaders may be impacted. The poster clearly thinks a lot of them have been around for 15 to 20 years, haven’t made enough progress, and have created a pretty toxic environment. If you look around the site, there are other posts with similar complaints about some of the same leadership groups, so this isn’t the first time that sentiment has come up. “NewCo” is the idea of basically starting fresh with some of the company’s major technology systems, like billing, instead of continuing to patch old legacy platforms forever. The idea is to build newer technology that can support things like AI and then slowly move off the old systems.

The jab in the post is that some of these IT leaders are now trying to act like NewCo was their idea and that they can suddenly pull off this huge transformation, even though the poster thinks they’ve had years to modernize things and haven’t.

“RemainCo” is basically a sarcastic play on NewCo, meaning whoever and whatever is left after the reorganization.

So the overall message is. the old IT leadership structure may finally be getting shaken up, a more product led model is coming (under Fraser who is a product leader within T&P), and the poster thinks the real changes are about to start showing up next week and what remains starts on September 8.

Can someone actually define NewCo and RemainCo?

by

Post ID: @e6+1m0xkspkp

@ds They’re basically saying a second phase of the reorganization is coming. The old GTO/IT leadership structure is expected to be broken up further, some legacy leaders may lose roles or influence, and the company is moving toward a product-led organization. They’re also claiming Fraser will have a major role in that new structure, that there’s internal disagreement over who really came up with the NewCo idea, and that RemainCo officially starts September 8, with more changes or announcements expected next week.

@OP This definitely sounds like the idea may have originally been OP’s and then got picked up elsewhere, which unfortunately would not be unusual in that IT organization. Ideas have a way of getting separated from the people who actually came up with them. I wouldn’t put it past them. Hopefully OP is okay.

We can all wish, but NewCo has been tried before and failed. It is difficult to believe the outcome will change under the same IT leadership that has struggled for years to deliver meaningful innovation. If this leadership were effective, these changes would have happened long ago; a new company or organizational switch should not be necessary. The deeper problem is the IT cultural dependence on contractors and consultants, leaders who reward compliance over independent thinking, and an environment that suppresses dissent and sidelines people behind good ideas. The organization also appears to keep promoting the same leaders into similar roles, repeating the same patterns while expecting different results. There are also concerns about favoritism and teams being built around compliance rather than capability or independent judgment. This weakens accountability and contributes to chaos. Any hiring or promotion practices influenced by stereotypes, including the objectification of women or assumptions about employees based on gender, are unacceptable and must be addressed. Changing the org chart without changing leadership, decision making, and culture is not transformation. A genuine leadership reset, along with a commitment to merit, accountability, inclusion, and innovation, might make NewCo credible. Until then, we can only wish.
