Thread regarding Open Text Corp. layoffs

When did merit stop mattering?

I keep asking myself when things started going wrong. I've been here long enough to remember a time when this company actually valued its best employees, when merit actually meant something, and when the people who worked hardest and produced the most were the ones who got rewarded. That feels like a different lifetime now. These days it's all about who can talk their way into favor and who knows the right people. That's it. That's all that matters. The ones who actually do the work are either ignored or shown the door.

@af Aside from the woman note. Haven't exactly heard of the males doing it either. >_> If that's for Sales, sorry. I would have an idea on who.

I do agree with most of this - my dept also recycles its '4 of the year'. Because I'm in that cycle, but I'm okay staying at 3 if it means not being tied down by falling RSU more. This is a known thing at OT and even a 4 may still get burned by poor dept budget. OT can't fix that until we sort the remaining sales and pending layoffs. At minimum.

So what do I get here? An antidepressant and occasionally good boy points from people I am too stubborn to want to accept it from anyway. It's not commission, not a kickback, and that workhuman portal can go down at anytime to be silently put back up. Those are the main 'goods' the rest are - always having work waiting, always being the one that lets others take their time off, having all sorts of people reach me for things that 100% SHOULD NOT BE MY MCF*CKING JOB. It's to a point that I consider the time 'sunk' and start early just to get a break later. To which I'm told 'YoU sHoUlD bE gLaD tHeY cOmE tO yOu, HeLp ThEm.' As I watch an older person do that and drown nearly daily.

F*ckThat. I don't blame the quiet quitters in my dept at this point, sounds pretty nice ngl.

I'm with you. Merit you to matter, but not anymore.
Now my higher up is forced to pick one person a year to be called exceptional. They flat out told me they move the position around between 3 people that all really deserve it ever year.
How shi$$y is that?
There is no reward for taking on extra work. You are lucky if you get a thank you. Our worthless woman Sr. Directory NEVER gives cash awards that are available to give. There little, but they do mean something to people that are losing money every year they work for this f'ing company.
