Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

December Layoffs - Anything from HR

I was impacted by one of the BS pittsburgh layoffs on December 16th. I was told that I would remain an employee through end of December and would then receive an agreement from HR to sign in order to get an extra 60 days pay.

As of 1/13, I still haven't received a box to return my computer and received nothing from HR. According to Voya, I'm still showing as an active employee and can't access any of my retirement funds until I'm terminated. Curious if anyone else laid off in December received their separation items yet. Also curious if anyone would be willing to share contact info for HR. My boss couldn't be bothered to provide me with that basic info when he fired me.

If you’re over 40, they need to give you 21 days to sign. If you don’t sign immediately are they going to stop the February 15th payment? That seems unlikely.

Just an update in case it's helpful for people who were laid off in Dec.

I am in Pittsburgh. I was laid off in Dec 2025. I was supposed to receive an email with an agreement around mid-Jan. Someone mentioned in a post below that the original promised mid-Jan date has been moved to Jan 30th. I called HR today. HR told me that the agreement will indeed be sent on Jan 30th. If I sign the agreement, I will be paid until 'some time in March', and my health insurance coverage will end on Mar 31st. However, if I don't sign the agreement, Jan 31st pay will be my last pay, and my health insurance will end on Jan 31st.

I was laid off on December 11th and I am from Pittsburgh. I got a courier from UPS immediately next day to ship my laptop. I haven’t received any email or mail

Can anyone confirm this information? 45 days to sign seems long? I thought the normal time frame was approximately 21 days? Being paid until mid March, even if you don’t sign? Seems BNY would want to stop paying unless you signed?

@cg Thank you so much for sharing this info! It would have been nice if BNY just sends us updates on what to expect when, instead of each of us calling and/or wondering each day if we're getting paid, our benefits lapsing, etc.

@ct hope it’s helpful. The situation definitely su-ks but it sounds like at the end of this, it could’ve still been much worse. Best of luck in your next chapter of life.

I was also let go early December. Also in Pittsburgh. I spoke with someone in HR last week and was told that because of the chaos from all of this happening and so many questions that even HR had, the “mid January” email we were to get is being pushed to January 30th. We are still employed with BNY systematically and will continue to get paid as normal through the end of January. Once you receive that email, you will have 45 days to sign it. You will still remain an employee systematically with BNY until March 15th even if you don’t sign it until then. On day 46, if you DONT sign it, you will then no longer be an employee. And payment will stop. If you DONT sign the email, you will continue to receive pay until March 31st. On April 1st, you will be eligible to apply for unemployment and it won’t be fought. I asked what do I do if I receive an employment offer from somewhere else in the meantime? They said we do not need to do anything. BNY does not track that information and the continued pay is pretty much just seen as a thank you for your service with the bank. So you can accept employment elsewhere. Do not need to notify BNY of it. If an employer asks why you’re leaving the bank, you tell them the position was terminated and it was a mutual release. That part is BS, but I guess this all could be much worse. So in short, we are going to get paid with full insurance through the end of March. Can apply for unemployment 4/1 with your last day of employment with BNY being 3/31. I did not ask about 401k matching. We CAN pull our RSU from Fidelity on 2/26 if you opted into that. This was all said via phone call though so take it with a grain of salt I guess

@OP no rush on the HR notice at a minimum you will have 60 days from the time they send the separation agreement for you to review and sign.

@bh how’s it going so far? I quit a couple months ago and I’m absolutely loving the freedom. Today for example, I woke up around 10:30 or so after a decent Monday night party. I just chilled, had some afternoon delight, took a nice long nap and woke up about 5pm. I can’t believe I’d still be working at this hour. Craziness I tell you!

Now I’m refreshed and showered and I get to figure out to do with my evening, without worrying about waking up early to deal with a bunch of miserable people (and a few decent ones sprinkled in). Ahhhhhh so nice.

Has anyone heard of any employee let go recently that actually got a fair severance package? What they were entitled to according to the severance policy?

If you are over 59.5 you can roll out of Voya and into an IM firm of your choosing at any time. And they cannot delay you.
I did.

I was there for 19 years, and get 60 days pay, what happened to the 2-weeks for every year of service? I’m sure they can do whatever they want, but that would’ve helped.

That’s exactly what I was told. Employee thru Dec, then 60 days, and I have also heard nothing from HR to this point. I did receive the box to return my computer however, which I have done.

@OP I called last week. I was told that the formal separation documents are being sent out mid January. For some reason, they cannot (will not?) provide a specific date, just that it will be 'mid January'. Why they are taking their time to send out the documents for us to review is beyond me. I was also told the documents will be sent out via email --- NOT via FedEx/UPS/return-receipt-requested mail, which is what should be expected for time-sensitive materials.
