Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Solidarity to all those affected today

We had several urgent back to back meetings about reorgs and layoffs. My position seems to be safe for now, but it was implied that they can't promise that more layoffs won't be coming down the pipeline.

We were told on one of the calls that we have to uphold our promise to our shareholders. Seriously? Since when did they become more important than our members? I, for one, am questioning my life choices that that led me to work for a company that puts employees and members far below shareholders and stock prices. Who else is polishing up their resume?

"Questioning my life choices" is exactly how I felt while working there. I have been at a few other carriers and nowhere did I feel more than "just a number" than I did at UHG. They talk a lot of culture and use all the right words in how they share info, but there is no human touch behind any of it. It's a machine of Corporate America, beholden to stock holders, not members. It was disheartening; I finally couldn't do it to myself or my team anymore and left.

I wish all those impacted the best of luck and I'd like to echo what others have said, there are other truly nice companies to work for where an individual employee can feel like a human being. Best of luck finding a role at one of those places.

I think we ALL KNOW INSURANCE IS A RACKET. The system is rigged. If you’re not at the top of the food chain, life just isn’t has pretty and comfy. I wasn’t even a manager so I was definitely a bottom feeder corporate world. I’m so sick of it.

How did we start talking about Venezuela? Please read a book about Latin American politics and watch something other than Fox News. I dare you. But...tangent...

Are you kidding? The members and insurance is all just a cover for the millionare making machine that is UnitedHealth Group. The members at one time were very important to the company. This was during the 1990's when we were an HMO. In the early 2000's focus began to shift from members to the all mighty dollar and how rich the executives and boardmembers could get. The company has truly lost its way, eliminating US jobs and filling them with incompitent and unreliable cheap labor overseas. The Trump administration should look into this company, and any company, that holds government contracts and hires overseas employees to replace US employees.

@1xzu this whole glorifying of the shareholder is a recent invention and it started in the 1990s. Prior to that, the country was #1, shareholders were not imprtant when it came beating communists etc. if you look at 1950s, 1960s, the worker was #1 - we were unionized across the board, wages were rising, etc. i am not saying we have to make it this way but i am just underlining that this whole #shareholder mantra is not as old as some think it is.

there are many "STAKEHOLDERS" that are in the game - the shareholder would not be able to invest if there is no country and system, society. our company would not exist if we did not have customers and clients. we'd stop working if vendors were to bail on on us. and, NOTHING will be dome if there was no WORKERS.

so, yeah, shareholders are important but all other stakeholders are equally important. the worker is getting the shaft here but the worker will wake up at some point or the system will collapse (you cannot screw the worker indefinitely)...

all what you need to do is to see how things are organized in europe and some asian countries and you'll realize that it's not all about shareholders. if you ask me, the country should be number one - if we do not take care of america we are hosed, everything collapses - and you cannot take care of america if you screw 85% of the population every-time you get a chance.

All shareholders come first with any company. shareholders are the owners of the company. the main job of a ceo is to maximize shareholder wealth because they will lose their jobs if they don't. its always been that way. its not right or moral but since when has our country been right or believed in Morales.

UHC will fail there are groups of employees that are more than capable of taking this place down. As an employer they don't have our backs and as an employee we don't need to have theirs anymore.
